Early Goal Leads Women’s Soccer Past Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. ----- The Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team defeated Valdosta State University 1-0 Sunday afternoon, after freshman Ruby Mendez tallied her first collegiate goal.
 
NOTES
• AUM improved to 1-1, while VSU fell to 0-1.
• Sophomore keeper Taylor Kitchens picked up her first career shutout.  

• The win marked the first for the women's soccer program in the NCAA Division II.  

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Mendez scored her first career goal this afternoon, and finished the game with six of the teams 12 shots, and put three of them on frame.
• Kitchens picked up her first clean sheet of her career, as well as picking up five saves.
• Freshman Allison Singleterry finished the afternoon with two shots, and one on goal.
Chelsie China, Agnes Edlund, Bronte Cintrone and Mandeville Wakefield each added a shot for the Warhawks.

• Mallory McDaniel led the way for the Blazers on three shots with two on frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After the first ten minutes of action, neither team was able to get much going offensively. The only chance came from an Edlund shot in the seventh minute, which was saved by the Blazer keeper.
• Mendez gave the Warhawks an early 1-0 lead in the 17th minute to record her first collegiate goal, as well as the first for the women's soccer program as a member of the NCAA.
• Valdosta State did not record a shot until the 28th minute, which was saved by Kitchens.
• At the half, the Warhawks held to a 1-0 lead.
• Neither team was able to score in the second half, as both teams acquired six shots.
• However, Kitchens added three more saves in goal for AUM to pick up her first career shutout, and give the Warhawks their first NCAA Division II victory.  


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM outshot Valdosta State 12-9, and placed six shots on frame, while Valdosta had five.
• Both keepers tallied five saves each.  

• Valdosta State led AUM in corner kicks 6-2.
• Valdosta State was called offside four times during the match, while AUM only acquired one.

QUOTING THE COACH
• "It's great to see this young team pulling an upset over such a talented Valdosta State squad," head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge stated. "Our freshmen are settling in very well and the veterans are leading the way in such pleasing fashion. I am extremely happy for our program's first NCAA win, and that Ruby Mendez was able to pick up her first collegiate goal."
 
UP NEXT
• The Warhawks return for the first home game of the season on Thursday, Sept. 8, when they host Young Harris College at 5:30 p.m.
