Warhawks Battle Hard But Bulldogs Pull Out Win, 5-3

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Auburn Montgomery men's soccer squad scored a season-high three goals against Union but the homestanding Bulldogs were able to pull away in the end, scoring the game winner in the 85th minute to upend the Warhawks, 5-3, in Gulf South Conference play on Sunday afternoon.
 
NOTES
• AUM falls to 0-12 on the season, with a 0-5 mark in the GSC.
• The three goals for the Warhawks were a season-high.
• Union improves to 3-7 overall and 3-4 in league play.
• The win for the Bulldogs avenges a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Warhawks last season.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• AUM's Simon Van Rheeden had a goal and an assist for the Warhawks. Van Rheeden now leads the team in goals with two.
Tiuri Schieving and Sverrir Smarason scored their first goals of the season.
• Union's William Valencia scored two goals, with teammate Andre Silva posting two assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
• The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead on goals by Valencia and Robel Dent, before Schieving was awarded a penalty kick that he put home to put the Warhawks on the board.
• Van Rheeden got the equalizer in the 42nd minute, scoring an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2.
• Union's Miguel Vilas put the Bulldogs up 3-1 in the 68th minute, taking a pass from A.J. Morgado for his first goal of the season.
• Smarason tied the game once again for the Warhawks, taking a pass from Van Rhedden and putting it home for AUM.
• Valencia scored the game winner in the 85th minute, taking a pass from Henrique Loureiro on a counter attack off of an AUM corner kick and beating the keeper to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 advantage.
• Daniel Bile clinched it for the Bulldogs in the 88th minute, with Silva getting his second assist on the day.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
• AUM took 21 shots (16 on goal) while Union took 26 (11 on goal).
• The Warhawks committed 12 fouls to just three for Union.
• AUM earned eight corners to only six for the Bulldogs.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks host Lee University on Friday, Oct. 13, at the AUM Soccer Complex as part of a doubleheader with the women's teams. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
