Walker’s Career Day Leads Softball to Perfect Finish in CSU Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. ------ The Auburn Montgomery softball team swept both of the final games of the Columbus State University Classic defeating Barry University 6-3, before defeating Catawba College 11-3 in five innings in the nightcap Saturday afternoon. Freshman Jaycie Walker finished with a career high eight RBIs on the day with a double and a home run.

NOTES
• The Warhawks improved to 14-7 on the year.
• The Buccaneers fell to 6-10 on the season.
• The Indians fell to 6-16 on the year.
• Walker picked up five RBIs in game two, and also scored a career-high three runs.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Walker provided the go-ahead three-run homer in the first game. She is first on the team with six doubles, first in hits with 24 and tied for second in RBIs with 17.
• Junior Kalee Sparks finished the second game 3-for-4 with a two-RBI double. She is tied with walker for RBIs, and is tied for second with 23 hits.
•Sophomore Kaylin Finch added a double in the first game, and is tied with Sparks for hits on the year.
• Freshman Parker Pinholster scored two runs on the day, and leads the team with 24 runs scored. She also totaled three stolen bases in the two games, and leads the team with 25.
• Senior Sarah Angulo picked up her first home run in game two, and sophomore Abby Krueger added a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored in game one.
• Senior Rachel Ragland improved to 7-3 on the allowing only one hit and no earned runs on two strikeouts in her 2 2/3 innings of relief in game two. Freshman Chanel Newcomer made her eighth appearance of the year in game one, and allowed one earned run in her three innings of relief to pick up her third win of the year.
• Jasmine Harris led the way for Barry on a 2-for-4 performance with all three of the team's RBIs. Leah Huggins led the way for Catawba finishing on a 1-for-2 performance with an RBI.

GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a scoreless first inning, AUM got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Ragland laced a double off the center field wall to bring home Krueger, which gave the Warhawks an early 1-0 lead.  
• Neither team scored in the third, but Barry responded in the top of the fourth. A Harris Single up the middle plated Head and Busekrus to give the Buccaneers to the 2-1 lead.
• AUM responded in the bottom of the fifth on Walker's blast to deep right field. The three-run shot put the Warhawks ahead 4-2 with two frames remaining in the game.
• Barry added an additional run in the top of the sixth on a Harris groundout to third that plated Head.
• AUM added two additional runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Persinger single to right that scored Krueger, and Finch crossed home on a throwing error.
• Newcomer sealed her third win retiring the final three Buccaneers without allowing a baserunner to preserve the 6-3 Warhawk win.

GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Catawba struck first in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly from Smith that plated Turner.
• AUM responded in the home half of the inning on a Walker single up the middle that plated Pinholster, and a Sparks single through the left side that Scored Walker to give the Warhawks the 2-1 advantage.
• After a scoreless second, Catawba added its final two runs of the game in the top of the third. A Shumaker sacrifice fly plated Turner, and a Huggins double to right-center scored Stinnard to give the Indians a 3-2 lead.   
AUM responded in the fourth on a Walker single to short that plated Nieves, and a Sparks double down the left field line to score Walker, which gave the Warhawks a 4-3 advantage.
•AUM exploded offensively for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early. Angulo led off the inning with a solo home run, and a fielding error allowed both Persinger and Finch to score.
• Later in the inning, Walker doubled to left-center with bases loaded that plated Pinholster, Tucker and Nieves. The final run was scored on a wild pitch as Walker slid into home to give the Warhawks the 11-3 victory in five innings, and gave the team a perfect 4-0 finish at the CSU Classic.

UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Tuesday, March 7, when they host Nova Southeastern University for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
