Softball Splits Twin Bill with Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala. ------ The Auburn Montgomery softball team split Friday afternoon's doubleheader with Spring Hill College. The Warhawks fell in the opener 1-0 in a true pitcher's duel, and responded with a 5-0 victory in game two.

NOTES
• The Warhawks moved to 22-17 on the year.
• The Badgers fell to 33-16 on the season.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior Amy Persinger was the only Warhawk to pick up a hit in both contests. She finished the games 2-for-2 with a single in each. She added three runs scored in the second game.
• Senior Rachel Ragland finished with a game-high three RBIs on a double in game two that helped the Warhawks earn the victory.
• Sophomore Kaylin Finch finished with a team-high two hits in game number two on a 2-for-4 performance.
• Freshman Taylor Tiffany allowed just one hit and one earned run on four strikeouts in game one, despite taking the loss.
• Freshman Chanel Newcomer improved to 6-5 on the year after throwing a four-hit shutout in game number two. She added two strikeouts and did not walk a batter in her outing.
• Kali Clement led the way for Spring Hill in game number one providing the games only RBI on a sacrifice bunt.

GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team acquired a base runner in the opening inning, as the pitching duel ensued. Dishman reached on a walk in the top of the second for AUM, and Spring Hill was retired in order for the second time in the home half of the inning.
• Tiffany had not allowed a base runner through the first three frames, however a leadoff triple from Byrd in the bottom of the fourth broke the streak. A fielder's choice allowed Charnock on base. Byrd was caught in a rundown at home and tagged out, however Charnock advanced to third on the play. A Sacrifice bunt from Clement scored the only run of the game to give Spring Hill a 1-0 lead.
• AUM tallied its first hit in the top of the sixth on a Persinger single down the right field line, however the Warhawks were unable to score a run.
• AUM picked up its final hit in the top of the seventh on a two-out double from Dishman to left center. However, AUM would be unable to plate the tying run as Spring Hill took game one of the doubleheader 1-0.

GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM scored its first run of the day in the opening inning of game number two. Pinholster walked to lead off the inning, and advanced to second after stealing her 35th bag of the year. A single to right from Walker advanced her to third, and a groundout from Sparks plated Pinholster to give the Warhawks an early 1-0 lead.
• Spring Hill responded with two singles in the bottom of the first, but Newcomer picked up a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning.
• AUM tallied an additional run in the top of the second. Persinger picked up her second hit of the day on a single to left, and advanced to second on a walk. Ragland picked up her first RBI of the day on a double to left center that scored Persinger to give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead.
• Spring Hill picked up a single in the bottom of the second, but were unable to plate a run.
• AUM added two additional runs in the top of the fourth. A Ragland sacrifice fly plated Schmidt, and a fielding error allowed Persinger to score, which extended the AUM lead to 4-0.
• AUM scored its final run of the game in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice bunt from Ragland that plated Persinger to bring the score to 5-0 in favor of the Warhawks.
• Newcomer retired ten straight Spring Hill hitters until a single in the bottom of the sixth. She retired the final five batters she faced to give AUM the 5-0 victory in game two, and the doubleheader split.
