MONTGOMERY, Ala. ------ The Auburn Montgomery softball team swept Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader against Brewton-Parker College on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day. The Warhawks came from behind to win in the eighth 4-3 in game one, and completed the sweep with a 5-0 shutout in game two.
NOTES
• The Warhawks finished 25-18 on the year.
• The Barons fell to 11-42 on the season.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior
Victoria Creamer added a double in the second game, and also scored a run.
• Freshman
Parker Pinholster added a triple in game one, as well as a pair of stolen bases in game two.
• Junior
Kalee Sparks finished with a team-high three hits on the day. She added an RBI and a run scored in the first game.
• Sophomore
Kaylin Finch also had a two-hit day in game number two.
• Freshman
Chanel Newcomer improved to 8-5 on the year, after throwing four innings of hitless relief with three strikeouts. Senior
Rachel Ragland improved to 10-7 after taking the circle for 3 2/3 innings in game two where she picked up four strikeouts on just two hits and no runs. Ragland added seven strikeouts within the circle in game one, and also provided the game-winning double in the bottom of the eighth.
• Morgan Page led the way for Brewton-Parker as she added a hit in each game as well as an RBI in game one.
GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team scored a run in the opening inning, but AUM took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Schmidt stole second, and advanced home after two throwing errors. Â
• Brewton-Parker responded immediately in the top of the third with two runs. A single through the right side scored Morris, and a fielding error allowed Rose to score, which gave the Barons a 2-1 advantage.
• AUM did not tally an additional run until the bottom of the fifth. Pinholster led off the inning with a triple to left center, and a sacrifice fly from Sparks allowed her to score, which tied the game at two.
• Neither team was able to scratch across a run for the remainder of the game, however Brewton-Parker opened up the top of the eighth with a single run. With the international tiebreak rules in affect, a groundout advanced Bennett to third, and a sacrifice fly from Winters gave the Barons a 3-2 lead.
• Sparks was placed on second for AUM, and a bunt single from Persinger allowed her to score on an errant throw to tie the game. Persinger advanced all the way to third, and a Ragland double to right center secured the game one win for the Warhawks 4-3 after eight innings of play.
GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM scored in the bottom of the opening inning after Pinholster led off the inning on a walk. She proceeded to steal two bases in the same pitch, and scored on a Persinger sacrifice bunt to give the Warhawks an early 1-0 lead.
• AUM added an additional two runs in the bottom of the third. A Finch single through the left side plated Persinger, and a costly throwing error allowed Finch to score, which gave the Warhawks a 3-0 lead after three.
• Brewton-Parker did not pick up more than one hit an inning throughout the second game, and AUM tallied its final two runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth. Creamer doubled to left center, and came home on a Dishman single to left field. Ragland followed up with a single to left that plated Hendrix for the final run.
• Ragland added an additional strikeout in the top of the seventh for her eleventh of the day, but fourth of game two, to secure the 5-0 win and the doubleheader sweep for the Warhawks.Â
UP NEXT
• The Warhawks finish the season with a 25-18 record and have completed the first NCAA Division II season.
