Warhawks Close Out Gulf Coast Invitational With A Pair Of Victories

GULF SHORES, Ala. – After going 1-1 on day one of the 2018 Gulf Coast Invitational the Auburn Montgomery softball team defeated Barry University 10-8 Saturday morning before coming from behind to upend Eckerd College 3-2 later in the day.
 
NOTES
• AUM is now 3-1 on the season.
• Both Berry and Eckerd fell to 1-2 this year.
Chanel Newcomer picked up the victory over the Buccaneers, improving to 2-1 on the year while Taylor Tiffany (1-0) picked up her first victory of the season in the game against the Tritons. Newcomer also earned her first save of the season, tossing the seventh inning against Eckerd.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Sophomore catcher Abby Krueger went 1-2 with four runs batted in and a run scored against Barry.
• Freshman infielder Hannah Dailey went 2-3 with three runs scored and a RBI against Barry, before going 1-1 with a run scored and a RBI against the Tritons.
• Freshman Gracie Poe had a pinch-hit 2-RBI single against EC.
• Tiffany pitched three no-hit innings with two strikeouts in the contest against Eckerd.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – BARRY
• AUM exploded for eight runs in the second and third innings, highlighted by a Krueger 3-RBI single in the third.
• Barry would get on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring on an AUM error.
• The Buccaneers cut the lead in half in the fourth, before the Warhawks tallied a runs in the fifth and sixth innings to increase their lead to 10-4.
•  Barry would score four runs in the bottom of the seventh before AUM would record three outs over two at bats to pick up the victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – BARRY
• AUM scored 10 runs on six hits while Barry recorded eight runs on nine hits.
• The Warhawks tallied five stolen bases while the Bucs recorded two.
• Barry hit two home runs in the defeat.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – ECKERD
• Eckerd plated runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead over the Warhawks.
• With one on and one out in the bottom of the fourth, Dailey doubled to right-center to drive in Michaelyn Foster who led off the inning with a single.
• While still in the fourth and runners on second and third, Poe singled to left to drive in a pair of runs and give the Warhawks a 3-2 lead.
• Newcomer closed out the game for AUM, forcing two ground outs and a pop up to end the contest.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – ECKERD
• Each team tallied six hits.
• EC tallied two walks while AUM had one.
• AUM stole three bases while the Tritons stole one.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host the annual AUM Tournament next weekend, hosting Clark Atlanta, Spring Hill College and Columbus State over two days. AUM will open the tournament on Saturday against Clark Atlanta at 11 a.m.
