MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Playing the third and final game of a three-game series the University West Alabama was able to outlast Auburn Montgomery for a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon, avoiding a sweep by the Warhawks in Gulf South Conference softball action.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 12-6 on the season with a 7-5 mark in league play.
• UWA improves to 7-18 overall and 3-9 in the GSC.
• The 2-1 series win gives AUM its first GSC home series victory in program history.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior outfielder
Kalee Sparks went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
• Designated player
Jaycie Walker was 2-for-4 with a run batted in.
• Junior pitcher
Natalie Johnsey was credited with the loss, but only allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two Tigers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM got on the board early scoring a run in the first when Walker singled to right to drive in
Parker Pinholster to give the Warhawks a 1-0 advantage.
• Neither team would do much offensively over the next four innings, until UWA got runners a second and third in the top of the fifth. The Tigers plated a run on a passed ball and then scored again on a Bree Thompson single to right to take a 2-1 lead.
• Rightfielder Nicole Buccieri led off the top of the sixth with a solo homerun to left field to give the Tigers an all important insurance run and a 3-1 lead.
• The Warhawks would answer with a run in the bottom of the sixth when senior outfielder
Amy Persinger delivered a single to left that scored Sparks from third and cut the UWA advantage to one run.
• In the seventh, however, AUM would get a runner to second with one out but a pair of pop ups by Warhawk batters would end the contest and give the Tigers a 3-2 victory.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• AUM scored two runs on six hits with one error.
• UWA plated three runs on five hits with no errors.
• Kamree Lay (2-1) picked up the win for UWA allowing only one run on four hits while striking out three.
• Andrea Edmonds earned her second save of the season, giving up one run on two hits in three innings of work.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host Valdosta State in a three-game series set to begin Saturday, March 17 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
