MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore pitcher
Chanel Newcomer picked up a win and a save and senior outfielder
Amy Persinger hit her first home run of the season in Auburn Montgomery's doubleheader sweep of Blue Mountain College on Monday afternoon at the AUM Softball Complex.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 10-5 on the season.
• BMC drops to 6-6 overall.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Newcomer improved to 5-3 on the year with her performance in game one while picking up her second save of the season in game two. She struck out nine batters on the day while giving up only one hit.
• Junior pitcher
Natalie Johnsey earned the game two victory, allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
• Sophomore outfielder
Parker Pinholster was 2-for-4 on the day, with a run batted in, a run scored, a walk and a stolen base.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
• Game one saw Persinger give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead with one out on the board when she delivered a blast to straightaway center for her first of the year and the 12
th of her career.
• The Toppers would answer in the top of the second, plating first baseman Meagan Edmonds on an AUM error that evened the game at 1-1.
• The Warhawks would plate three runners in their half of the second, scoring on a Pinholster single to right and then another two on a
Hannah Dailey sacrifice bunt that scored
Kendall Tucker followed by a BMC error that allowed Pinholster to score.
• AUM manufactured their fifth run of the game on the bases in the bottom of the third. With runners at first and third the Toppers committed a throwing error on a pickoff attempt that allowed
Kalee Sparks to score from third.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME ONE
• AUM scored five runs on seven hits while committing one error.
• BMC scored one run on four hits with two errors in the contest.
• The Warhawks stole four bases.
• As a team AUM hit for the cycle, with Sparks providing a double and a triple.
• Newcomer picked up the win in relief, entering the game in the top of the third and striking out a career-high tying seven batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
• Game two began as a pitcher's dual, with neither team able to figure out what Montanna Smith (BMC) and Johnsey were dealing out from the circle.
• Designated player
Jaycie Walker would manage a triple to right-center to give AUM a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third. Persinger would be hit by a pitch with two outs giving the Warhawks runners at first and third. Persinger would attempt to steal second to force a run down on the base paths, allowing Walker to score from third as Persinger would get back to first safely to keep the inning alive.
• Walker's run proved to be the game's only run, as Newcomer entered the game in the seventh and got a pair of strikeouts to close out the game.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME TWO
• AUM scored one run on five hits.
• BMC recorded three hits.
• Neither team committed an error.
• The Toppers recorded four caught stealing.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host Gulf South Conference foe West Alabama this weekend in a three-game series set to begin on Saturday. There will be a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday followed by a single game on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
