Warhawks Close Out 2018 With 9-0 Drubbing Of UWG

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Auburn Montgomery softball team closed out the 2018 season with a 9-0 defeat of Gulf South Conference foe West Georgia on Sunday afternoon, as the Warhawks take the rubber match with the Wolves to earn the 2-1 series victory.
 
NOTES
• AUM finishes the season with an overall record of 29-16 and 19-14 in the GSC.
• UWG falls to 25-27 and 10-23 in league play.
• The Warhawks finish their first season as a member of the Gulf South and currently would be the No. 6 seed in the 2018 GSC Softball Tournament if eligible.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Sophomore catcher Abby Krueger went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in, a run scored and a stolen base.
• Sophomore outfielder Parker Pinholster went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a stolen base.
• Sophomore slugger Jaycie Walker went 3-for-4 offensively with a run scored, a double and a stolen base.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM drew first blood in the top of the third when right fielder Morgan Duschell hit into a fielder's choice that allowed pinch runner Cydney Sizemore to score from third. UWG then committed an error which allowed Duschell to score and left fielder Kalee Sparks to reach first. Sparks then stole second and was plated by a Pinholster single to left to give the Warhawks a 3-0 lead.
• The Warhawks tallied four runs in the top of the fourth beginning with an Amy Persinger sacrifice fly to center that scored pinch runner Kasidy Thompson to score from third. A Krueger single then drove in Walker followed by a Pinholster two-RBI single to left to put the Orange and Black up 7-0 in the fourth.
• In the top of the seventh the Warhawks loaded the bases for Persinger who was hit by a pitch that plated Hannah Dailey from third. Kruger picked up her second RBI of the day one batter later to score Michaelyn Foster and put the Warhawks up 9-0.
• UWG were unable to plate any runners in the final frame.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• AUM scored nine runs on 13 hits with to errors.
• UWG recorded six hits and three errors.
Chanel Newcomer picked up the win to improve to 14-8 on the season, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing two hits while striking out three.
• Danielle Easterly fell to 3-9 on the season after allowing six runs (three earned) and six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will head into the offseason after this weekend's contests, as they continue their transition to the NCAA Division II level.
