Spickenbaum’s Golden Goal Propels Men’s Soccer to Double-OT Win at Shorter

ROME, Ga. – Freshman midfielder Phillip Spickenbaum netted the golden goal for the Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team in their 2-1 double overtime win against Gulf South Conference foe Shorter University on Sunday, Sept. 23rd.
 
Notes
- With the win, the Warhawks picked up their first GSC victory of the season and improved to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in GSC play.
- Sunday's match marked for the second overtime contest for the Warhawks in their last four matches. 
- The win also marked for the Warhawk's second consecutive win over the Hawks in as many seasons. 
 
Standout Performers
- Spickenbaum was responsible for both a goal and an assist in Sunday's match, posting a game-high-three points. The Niederkruchten, Germany native also took two shots on the afternoon.
- Austin Sun Chee Fore also knocked in a goal for AUM, in addition to taking a team-high three shots. 
- Alexis Arriaga and Tate Dean both took two shots on the afternoon, with Arriaga accounting for a team-high two shots on goal
- Freshman keeper Alexander Kraus (1-5) picked up his first collegiate win in goal, while logging nine saves on the day for AUM.
 
How it Happened
- The Warhawks struck first in the match in the 36th minute, on Sun Chee Fore's score that Spickenbaum helped set up. The Warhawks would take their 1-0 lead into the break.
- Shorter quickly responded in the second period, as they were able to tie the match up with a goal just 29 seconds into the second half.
- The 1-1 score would hold for the reminder of regulation and one overtime period before Spickenbaum would delver the golden goal in the 103rd minute, his first collegiate score. 
 
Quoting the Coach
"I'm just really proud of our guys," Head Coach Wulf Koch said. "It was really hot playing on the turf today, but they battled through it.  Alexander kept us in the game with another outstanding performance in goal, and Phillip came up huge for us today with his assist on the first goal and the game-winner in double overtime." 
 
Inside the Boxscore
- AUM took 12 shots on the day, with six shots on goal. The Warhawks took six shots in the first period, four in the second and one in each overtime period.
- The Warhawks recorded double-digit saves for the second time this season, amassing 10 on the afternoon. 
- AUM did not allow Shorter to take a shot in either overtime period.
