MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- The Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team battled Gulf South Conference foe Lee University to a 0-0 draw in a back-and-fourth defensive clash on Monday, Oct. 28 from the AUM Soccer Complex.
NOTEWORTHY
- With the draw, the Warhawks' 2019 record now sits at 7-4-3 on the year, and 4-1-3 in GSC action.
- The tie also brings AUM's all-time series advantage over the Flames to 14-5-3.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Sophomore keeper
Alexander Kraus (7-2-3) logged three saves for the Warhawks on the night, while recording his fifth shutout of the season. Kraus now owns a 0.78 goals against average on the year, and a 0.68 GAA against GSC opponents.
-
Arnaud Baron took a team-high three shots on the evening, with one on goal.
-
Renan Diniz and
Lyndsey Moreland both tallied a pair of shots, while
Lucas Batistela,
Thomas Carlile and Diniz all added a shot on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither defense gave much leeway early, with just 10 combined shots for both teams in half number one.
- The Flames would get their best scoring look in the first period in the 32nd minute on a solid strike from deep into the AUM box, but Kraus would hold his ground to knock away a very close attack to keep the match scoreless.
- The Warhawks would rattle off a couple looks before the break, including a header from Carlile in minute number 35 that landed safely in the Lee keeper's arms, and a flush strike from Baron from outside that missed just high in minute number 42.
- The Warhawks got their first look of the second half on a header by Diniz in the 49th minute, but his strike was met by the Lee netminder.
- Following a 65th minute strike from Batistela at the outside left that found the Lee goalie, the Flames would get arguably their best chance at a goal in the 79th minute. Following an AUM foul, the Flames would send a free kick from just outside the top of the box inches above the crossbar for a near miss.
- Two additional overtime periods would see neither team find the back of the net. The Warhawks saw one of their better chances to end the game in the first overtime period, courtesy of a
Jabari Broussard header from inside the box that missed just left.
QUOTING THE COACH
"I'm proud of the boys," Head Coach
Matthew Thorne said. "We had a tough game on Friday, and tonight was our third game in six days. These boys just kept working for each other. There weren't too many chances on either end for both teams, which is a credit to how well both back lines were tonight. At the end of the day, it's another clean sheet, so I'm very proud of that. We're another point closer to clinching a postseason berth. We'd like to be pushing for a top-four spot in postseason play, but we'll have to take it game-by-game. We know we have tough games ahead, and right now it's all about recovery and focusing on our upcoming opponents in Mississippi. This group keeps pushing hard, and for that I am proud of them."
