Morrow, Ga. – The Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team dropped the season-opening match on the road to the Clayton State Lakers on Monday afternoon by a score of 4-1. This was the first official NCAA DII game in school history.
- AUM starts the season 0-1, while Clayton State wins their inaugural game of 2019.
- Six Warhawks made their AUM debut during the game, including
Emily Cruce, who recorded her first collegiate point on an assist on the goal by
Mayson Jaindl.
- The Warhawks set a school-record with 16 saves in the contest.
Standout Performers
- Jaindl scored her first goal of the season in the 60' minute to cut the score to 2-1 at the time. She was also able to register one of two shots on goal for the team.
- Clayton State's Ann-Catherin Zable netted a goal and five shots during the Lakers' victory, marking her 12th-career goal
- Manoly Baquerizo led all players with 12 shots while putting seven of the 12 on goal.
How it Happened
- Clayton State dominated possession in the first five minutes of the game, coming close to breaking the scoreless tie on a number of occasions, yet Warhawks goalie Chole Kistler was able to deny a number of scoring chances.
- The Lakers were finally able to break the scoreless tie in the 8' minute on a goal from Pia Haug off a corner kick from teammate Moya Loftman. The ball was slotted into the top right corner by Haug to record her first goal of the season.
- Clayton State found the back of the net again in the 17' minute of play when Zable took advantage of a pass from Teya Holloman. Zable took the ball on the right wing and placed it into the right corner of the goal.
- The Warhawks would get the second half started in style when freshman midfielder Cruce slotted a ball past the Laker defense to the feet of Jaindl who was able to pound the ball past the keeper to score the first goal of the season for AUM.
- Despite the Warhawks' best efforts, Clayton State remained on the attack and scored their third goal of the game off a corner that ricocheted off
Trinity Prater and into the AUM net to run the score to 3-1.
- The Lakers added one last goal in garbage time on a 90' minute goal by Janne Brouer. She was able to deposit the ball into the right side of an open net that was vacated by the AUM defense.
Inside the Boxscore
- Clayton State outshot AUM 33-3.
- The Warhawks registered two shots on goal, while the Lakers tallied 21 shots on target.
- Kistler and
Dejon Fletcher split time in goal and combined to stop 16 shots, meanwhile, Clayton State was able to net two saves.
Up Next
- AUM will open their home schedule on Sunday, Sept. 8 with a meeting against the Newberry College Wolves. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
