Home Runs Power Softball To Game One Win Over Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team used three home runs to down Gulf South Conference foe Delta State 8-2 on the road in the first game of a three-game series.

NOTES
- The Warhawks have won three in a row and now sit at 13-5 overall.
- The Orange & Black bring their conference record to 6-4 in 2020.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Abby Krueger launched her second home run of the season.
- Jaycie Walker knocked in a run with a solo shot.
- Kendall Tucker cleared the bases with a grand slam in the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After stranding the bases loaded in the first inning, the Warhawk catcher Krueger came up to the plate with Hannah Dailey at first base and launched a ball over the right field wall to give AUM a 2-0 lead.   
- Alanna Goble was locked in during the middle innings of the series opener against the Lady Statesmen, recording five strikeouts in six outs recorded to begin action in Mississippi.      
- The score remained at 2-0 until the top of the sixth when Walker came up to the plate and deposited a ball over the left centerfield wall to give the Warhawks an important 3-0 lead late in the game.   
- Walker's home run loomed larger in the bottom half of the inning as Delta State's Taylor Picou hit a two-run shot to bring Delta State back to within a run.
- The tallest second basemen in the GSC earned herself the title of the Grand Slam Champ in the seventh inning after destroying a ball over the left field wall to score four runs and give the Warhawks a 7-2 lead.
- The scoring stopped later that inning when Olivia Aycock doubled home Dailey to give AUM the eight runs they needed to win game one of the series.  

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Warhawks slugged four home runs.
- AUM left 10 runners on base, while Delta State left four runners on.
- Goble and Cydney Sizemore combined to strikeout eight batters.

"Delta played us tough, happy to get the first one. The long ball proved to be vital and I'm thankful the girls fought hard and came out with the win."

UP NEXT
AUM and Delta State will finish their three-game series tomorrow afternoon in Cleveland with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
