MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat at home to No. 7-ranked Gulf South Conference foe West Florida to begin their 2021 regular season.

The Warhawks begin the season with a loss while West Florida picks up win number one in the Argo's season opener.

"We battled really well," said head coach Yair Banuelos. "The ladies came out with a lot of energy and played really good doubles in all three courts. In singles, we played well, but versus top-10 teams, you have to take your opportunities, and we didn't play our best in important moments. We'll take this learning experience to our next match, which is versus another top-10 team."

The Warhawks were dominant in doubles play to start the season, sweeping all three matches to take the double's point. Sofia Navarro and Maria Casas were effective against the Argo's top pair, winning 6-4.

Singles play was more of a challenge for AUM as West Florida was able to cruise to a number of singles victories. Julia Enderink gave Raissa Wagner all she could handle out of the six-position, falling 6-7, 7-5, 4-10.

The women's team will return to action on Sunday when they play host to No. 5 Columbus State. The match from the AUM Tennis Complex is set to begin at 1 p.m.
