Softball Drops Dramatic Game One To #23 West Florida 4-2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team had their 21 game winning streak snapped at home against Gulf South Conference foe and No. 23 West Florida 4-2 on Friday night to begin a three-game series.

The Warhawks suffer their first loss of the season and now stand at 14-1 on the year with a 6-1 GSC series. West Florida improves to 14-6 on the year with an 8-2 conference mark.

Junior shortstop Olivia Aycock went 2-3 at the plate and drew a walk against West Florida. Hannah Dailey added a home run to tie the game in the second, netting her second home run of the year.

West Florida used three home runs to power their way past AUM, starting in the first inning with a two-run homer off AUM starter Alanna Goble to give the Argos a quick 2-0 lead over the Orange & Black.

With Aycock on the bases in the bottom half of the first, Jaycie Walker laced a shot over the center fielder's head to score the junior shortstop, adding a run for the Warhawks and furthering her spot on the all-time doubles list.

In the second, Goble was able to work around a leadoff base hit to strand the UWF runner at first, while Dailey provided more offensive firepower to tie the game at two with a towering solo home run over the left-field wall.

The two starters settled in momentarily in the third inning, cruising through the other team's lineups. In the top of the fourth, West Florida was able to add another solo shot to regain a one-run lead.

AUM squandered a golden opportunity in the bottom of the fourth. The Warhawks had the bases loaded and one away in the inning but were unable to cash in, leaving the game at a 3-2 advantage for West Florida.

The Argos capitalized in the following inning on the Warhawks' troubles at the plate, with another home run from West Florida's Howard to give West Florida a 4-2 lead.

AUM would not go quietly as the Warhawks were able to get Allie Miller and Aycock into scoring position with two away in the inning. Walker represented the game-winning run and would work a full count before flying out to left field to end the game.

Games two and three of the series from the AUM Softball Complex are scheduled for Saturday, March 13, beginning at 1 p.m.
