ROME, Ga. – In a late-night, run-filled doubleheader, the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team tallied a 13-0 and 13-2 victory over Gulf South Conference foe Shorter on the road on Friday night to win their 18
th and 19
th game of the season.
AUM moves to 18-4 on the year with a 10-4 record in conference action. Shorter meanwhile falls to 4-18 in 2021.
The Warhawks held the Hawks hitless through four and two-thirds innings in game one of the doubleheader, falling one out shy of tallying a no-hitter.
Brinkley Yevak was pinned with the win, her second on the season.
AUM totaled three home runs in the first game,
Molly Cobb,
Kathryn Fallen, and
Parker Pinholster all launched balls over the fence against the Hawks in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Warhawks did not let Shorter get comfortable in game one, as
Allie Miller drew a leadoff walk, stole two bases, and was brought home by an RBI double by Cobb to give the Orange & Black a lead in the first inning.
The second inning proved to be exactly what the Warhawks needed to put the Hawks away for good, as the Warhawks were able to net 10 runs in the second. After
Gracie Harris scored on a passed ball, Fallen stepped up and launched a home run over the center-field wall to give AUM a 5-0 lead.
With Cobb as the next hitter, she launched her eighth home run of the season to give AUM a 6-0 lead. Freshman standout
Gia Martin kept her spectacular season going with an RBI single to right field and then later scored on a wild pitch.
The scoring in the second inning ended when Pinholster stepped up and launched a ball into the deep, dark night to score three runners, and it gave the Warhawks an 11-0 lead.
Two more runs in the fifth inning furthered AUM's grip over Shorter and stellar pitching from
Bailie Barnes, and Yevak gave AUM a 13-0 win.
Cobb's four-hit performance in game two cemented a 5-6 day with six RBIs. Senior catcher
Abby Krueger and sophomore utility standout
Lauren Haskins both tallied home runs in the second game to aid AUM to the win.
Another RBI single in the first inning from Cobb gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead as Miller and Cobb teamed up to put AUM on the board early.
The third inning for the Warhawks proved to be the driving force behind the win, as AUM was able to put five runs on the board. The scoring began with Cobb's second RBI of the game, this time plating
Olivia Aycock on an RBI double.
Krueger, the next batter, tattooed a ball over the outfield fence to give the Orange & Black a 5-0 lead.
Morgan Duschell joined in on the fun, plating Fallen on a single to center field.
Cobb's RBI double in the fourth inning was answered by a two-run home run by Shorter for the Hawks first runs of the game to run the score to 7-2.
Harris registered an RBI single in the fifth to push the Warhawks' lead back to six, while Martin's two-run single to left put AUM to the brink of victory. Haskins launched a ball over the left-field wall, scoring Martin and
Kendall Tucker to give AUM a 13-2 win.
Both teams will turn around and play again tomorrow morning, beginning at 9:30. The Warhawks will go for their 20
th win of the season, and the series sweep over the Hawks.
