MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Junior
Phillip Spickenbaum slotted in the game-wining golden goal for the Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team to secure a 2-1 overtime victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday, March 6 from the AUM Soccer Complex.
With the win, AUM improves to 2-0-1 in the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series while UAH drops to 1-1-2
Spickenbaum's strike came in the 100th minute of the match and was set up by an on-target free kick from
Eric Besse. The goal marked for his second of the 2021 season.
Renan Diniz also tallied a score in the contest. The junior forward punched in a penalty kick in the 56th minute that tied up the contest, finishing with a game-high four shots taken.
In goal,
Alexander Kraus (2-0-1) grabbed four saves on the way to his second victory of the year.
UAH got on the board first in the 9th minute on a run that ended in Rafa Moreno setting up Michael Weston to put the Chargers up 1-0.
AUM outshot UAH 19-11 in the contest. The Warhawks took 10 shots in the first period, six in the second, and three in overtime.
"Tonight was a typical Gulf South Conference derby contest," Head Coach
Matthew Thorne Said. "We always go toe-to-toe when we play each other and our games are very high intensity. It was a well-fought battle against a well-coached UAH team with tons of great players on their side. The fact that our lads were able to battle back in the second half with the equalizer and in overtime when everyone's legs were dead shows the fight that they have. It was truly a team performance that I am overall delighted with. We'll enjoy it tonight, and get back to it on Monday to prepare for Shorter. Every game from here on out is the biggest game of the season."
The men's soccer team will play their final game of 2021 GSC Spring Championship Series on Thursday, March 11 against Shorter University. Kickoff from the AUM Soccer Complex is set for 5:00 p.m.
