#19 Warhawks Complete Sweep With 1-0 Win Over Montevallo

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 19th ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team completed the three-game sweep over Gulf South Conference rival Montevallo on Sunday afternoon after winning game three 1-0.

The Warhawks hold on to second place in the Gulf South with just three games left to play until the postseason. AUM improves to 32-5 overall and finishes their home schedule with a record of 16-3.

Bailie Barnes was spectacular in the circle again for AUM in game three, going the distance while allowing just four hits. She did not allow Montevallo to score and struck out three Falcons.

The only offense for AUM came from freshman Gia Martin, who smacked her ninth home run of the year to give AUM their lone run of the game.

The Warhawks offense was cold most of the game against Montevallo, striking out nine times in the contest. Things looked promising for AUM in the first, with a leadoff double from Allie Miller. However, the Warhawks were unable to bring her in.

With Barnes taking care of business in the circle through three hitless innings. The number nine hitter for AUM, Martin, stepped up and launched a high strike over the center-field wall to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead after three innings.

Montevallo threatened to score for the first time in the top of the fifth when a hit by pitch, a single, and a stolen base put runners on second and third with one out. Barnes was able to get a popup to record the second out. The next batter lined a ball off the leg of the senior pitcher and right to the first basemen Molly Cobb to get AUM out of the jam.

The Falcons got a two-out baserunner in the sixth inning, but Barnes made quick work by inducing a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the sixth without allowing a run.

Trouble met the Warhawks in the top of the seventh, as two straight singles put pressure on the AUM defense. A two-out walk loaded the bases for the number nine hitter in Montevallo's lineup, but Barnes was able to get her to hit into a force play at second to secure the series sweep.

AUM will hit the road for the final series of the regular season next weekend when they travel to face GSC foe West Alabama for a three-game series. The first game from Livingston, Ala., is scheduled for Friday, April 30 at 1 p.m.
