VALDOSTA, Ga. The third ranked and top-seeded Auburn University at Montgomery softball team was shutout 5-0 in the second round of the NCAA South Regional by fifth-seeded and Gulf South Conference foe West Florida 5-0 on Thursday afternoon.
The Warhawks were only able to muster two hits, one by
Allie Miller and the other by
Gia Martin.
Brinkley Yevak and
Chanel Newcomer came in and threw 3.1 innings in relief, allowing three hits and no runs.
The Argos wanted to set the tone early offensively and were able to jump on the scoresheet first. After a leadoff single to begin the game, West Florida used two sacrifice bunts to push across the game's first run and took a 1-0 lead.
AUM had a chance to answer in the bottom of the second inning. After a one-out walk from
Abby Krueger, a wild pitch and a stolen base put the senior catcher on third. The Warhawks, however, were not able to capitalize as a popout and a lineout send the Warhawks down in the second.
The Argos led off the top of the third inning with a solo home run, Madilynne Webb's first of the day to give West Florida an early 2-0 lead. AUM, again, had a chance to answer in the bottom half of the inning but were held off the scoreboard after stranding two runners.
West Florida exploded in the fourth inning for three runs of Warhawk starter
Bailie Barnes. After a single and an error to begin the inning, Webb came up again with two runners on and hit an opposite field home run to give the Argos a 5-0 lead.
The Warhawks had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when AUM had two runners on with two outs. However, a popout ended the Orange & Black's threat in the sixth.
AUM falls to the losers bracket and will face the loser of the Alabama Huntsville and Valdosta State game. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
