OXFORD, Ala. – The No. 4-ranked and top-seeded Auburn University at Montgomery softball team advanced to the Gulf South Conference semifinals with a 10-0 drubbing of fifth-seeded West Georgia to improve to 2-0 on the day.
The 10-0 win over West Georgia marked the second win of the day for the Warhawks after defeating Montevallo in game one of the tournament 4-1. The two wins keep AUM in the winner's bracket for tomorrow's semifinals.
Allie Miller had another terrific game at the plate in game two of the tournament, going 3-5 against the Wolves with three RBIs and two runs.
Molly Cobb and
Abby Krueger both had two-hit games and drove in two runs each.
Alanna Goble and
Brinkley Yevak were great in the circle against the fifth-seeded Wolves. Goble started the game for AUM and went 3.2 innings, allowing four hits and striking out three. Yevak came in and tossed the remainder of the game, allowing just two hits and recording two strikeouts.
AUM's offense did not struggle to get going in the first inning against UWG. A leadoff single, a passed ball, and a force out placed Miller on third base for Cobb. The sophomore laced a ball to the shortstop who was playing deep enough for Miller to score the game's first run.
In the second inning, it was Miller's turn to produce some offense, coming up to bat with runners on second and third. The junior labeled a ball into right field to score
Lauren Haskins and
Gia Martin, tripling the AUM lead.
Pitching had the upper hand after the second inning. Goble and Yevak were anchoring down the AUM defense, thanks to some help from
Olivia Aycock and
Parker Pinholster.
The fifth inning saw Cobb drive in her second run of the game on an RBI single to score Aycock. While an RBI double from Miller in the top of the sixth brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Warhawks.
AUM was not done, however, in the top of the sixth as Aycock was able to put a ball in play that scored both Pinholster and Miller on an error from the second basemen.
The Warhawks added three runs in the top of the seventh, beginning with
Abby Krueger's two-run single to left field. The scoring ended for AUM after
Jaycie Walker reached on a fielding error, allowing Krueger to cross the plate for AUM's 10
th run of the game.
AUM advances to the GSC Semifinals tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The Warhawks will await the winner of the loser's bracket matchup between Valdosta State and Montevallo.
