Set-Piece Success Sends Women’s Soccer Past Lander, 2-1

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team made the most of its four corner kicks taken on Sunday, Sept. 12 against Lander University by finding the back of the net on two of them, including the game-winner from senior Mayson Jaindl in minute number 84 to seal a 2-1 win over the Bearcats.

With the win, the Warhawks cap off a perfect weekend road trip in South Carolina and improve to 2-1 on the season.

AUM cracked the scoreboard first in minute number 32, when Anila Mantello sent a high-arching corner kick into the box that found the head of Maggie Flanagan for her first collegiate score.

The Bearcats would go on to deliver the equalizer in minute number sixty, paving the way for a dramatic final thirty minutes.

Jaindl's 84th-minute game-winner lobbed in just over the outstretched arms of the Bearcat keeper. The goal, Jaindl's first of the season, was set up by another precise corner kick from Mantello that found the head of Ariel Jones first and clanked off the crossbar before finding the foot of the senior forward.

"I'm so proud of this team and the effort put forth by our girls today," Head Coach Julianne Herrity said. "We could have easily gotten down after conceding the equalizer in the second period, but instead kept fighting and found a way to come away with a tough road win against a quality team."

The Warhawks were outshot by Lander in the contest, 20-10, with five of AUM's shots coming on frame. Freshman Sydney Garth accounted for a team-high three shots taken, with two shots on goal.

In goal, Karla Gaytan improved to 2-1-0 with the win. The junior keeper hauled in six saves on the day and totaled 12 saves with just one goal allowed over the course of two matches this weekend.

The women's soccer team will return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 17 when they open up Gulf South Conference play at home against Mississippi College. Kickoff from the AUM Soccer Complex is set for 5:00 p.m. (CST)
