#15 Warhawks Use Four-Run Sixth To Take Game One Over West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Trailing 5-3 in the sixth inning, the 15th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team scored four runs in the inning to secure the team's first Gulf South Conference win of the season in an 8-5 win over West Georgia.

The Warhawks move to 9-3 on the season with a 1-0 mark in GSC play. West Georgia, meanwhile, falls to 4-9 on the year and remains winless in GSC action with an 0-4 record.

Chloe Derrick had a great day at the plate, netting three early RBIs for the Warhawks. The freshman went 2-3 with three RBIs and a walk. Sophomore slugger Kat Fallen connected on her second home run of the season to break the scoreless tie in the sixth.

Hannah Creel and Avery Dickerson teamed up to limit West Georgia to just four hits on the night. The duo surrendered three earned runs while striking out six batters.

The Warhawks started the scoring early, as a walk and a double from Haley Ann Frank and Olivia Aycock put two runners on base for Derrick. The freshman lined a double down into the left-field corner to give AUM an early 2-0 lead.

West Georgia would add a run in the bottom of the first and would take the lead in the second inning after a two-run single from Logan Nix put West Georgia ahead 3-2. The Wolves' scoring in the second ended after an error from Frank allowed the fourth and fifth runs to score.

Derrick and the Warhawks added a run in the top half of the third inning, as Derrick's second double of the afternoon scored Gia Martin to cut the West Georgia lead to two.

The Warhawks completed their comeback in the sixth inning, as Fallen launched a two-run home run with one out in the inning to score Shelby Newsome and tied the game at five.

Faith Wheat would reach on an error from West Georgia's first basemen, allowing Martin and Aycock to score to put the Warhawks ahead by two heading into the seventh. After a scoreless inning from Dickerson, Aycock added an insurance run on an RBI double to give AUM their eventual 8-5 victory.

The Warhawks will conclude their first GSC series tomorrow when they face off against the Wolves two more times from University field starting at noon. It will also be the last of a 14-game road trip to start the 2022 season.
