Ferguson Tallies Two Wins To Aid #14 Softball’s Saturday Sweep

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 14th ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team opened its season and the Gulf Shores Invitational with wins over Nova Southeastern and Lubbock Christian to begin the 2022 season.

The Warhawks bested Nova Southeastern 6-3 before beating Lubbock Christian 8-4 in a nine-inning thriller.

Eight Warhawks made their AUM debut in game one against the Sharks, with freshman pitcher Morgan Ferguson tallying her first collegiate win after throwing 3.1 innings of relief. Meanwhile, Jacksonville State transfer Alex Howard tallied a team-leading two RBIs without recording a hit.

AUM's 2022 team started similar to the 2021 version as they scored early and often against the Sharks in the season opener. Kat Fallen struck first for AUM, drawing a bases-loaded walk to score Haley Ann Frank.

Two batters later, Gia Martin drew a walk with the bases juiced, scoring Chloe Derrick and doubling the AUM lead over Nova Southeastern. The scoring in the first inning finished with a Howard sacrifice fly, with Molly Cobb scoring on an error to plate an additional run for AUM.

Nova answered in the top of the second inning, securing a two-run single off Warhawk ace Alanna Goble. The two runs in the second would be the only two runs Goble surrendered as she went 3.2 innings of work while giving up just four hits.

Howard would gain another RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning, bringing Fallen in on another sacrifice fly. Derrick registered her first RBI as a Warhawk an inning later, scoring Olivia Aycock with an RBI single to run the score to 6-2.

Rocky waters awaited Ferguson in the top of the seventh as Nova Southeastern threatened with the bases loaded. The Sharks capitalized with an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-3, but Ferguson escaped danger and secured her first career win after locking down a 6-3 AUM victory.

Rookie outfielder Frank led the Warhawk offense in game two on Saturday, securing a two-hit game against Lubbock Christian. Sophomore slugger Martin added three RBIs to bring her daily total to four.

AUM used three pitchers to beat the Chaps as Hannah Creel and Ferguson worked in relief of Brinkly Yevak, who started the game and spun four innings of two-run softball. Warhawk pitching struck out 12 Chaps while surrendering just three earned runs.

Both offenses were stumped by stellar pitching to begin the game as both sides were held off the scoreboard through four innings of play. Lubbock Christian broke the scoring first in the bottom of the fifth off of Creel, securing a two-run double to go ahead 2-0.

Martin and the Warhawks followed suit in the top of the sixth after the sophomore third baseman unloaded on a two-run triple to tie the game at two. AUM wasn't done scoring in the sixth as newcomer Lexie Bullock knocked in an RBI sacrifice bunt to give AUM the lead.

Senior mainstay Aycock used her speed to cause havoc on the Chaps defense, reaching on an error from the Lubbock third baseman, allowing Haylee Brown to score and allowing AUM to grow their lead to 4-2.

After the Chaps scrapped across a run in the bottom of the sixth, Creel could not lock down the game in the bottom of the seventh as Lubbock tied the game at four.

A nervous eighth inning came and went with the game still tied at four. Cobb came to the plate with one runner on and laced a double into center field to give AUM a 5-4 lead. With the bases loaded, the Warhawks earned another bases-loaded walk to give AUM a two-run lead.

AUM newcomers teamed up to secure the next two runs for the Warhawks as Howard's infield single scored Fallen before Lexi Love scored the game's final run for AUM after a sacrifice fly that scored Shelby Newsome gave AUM an 8-4 advantage.

Ferguson was locked in during extra inning play and finished her second win off in fashion, striking out two of the three batters she saw in the bottom of the ninth to secure AUM's second win of the day.

The Warhawks will wrap up the Gulf Shores Invitational tomorrow morning when they face off against Sunshine State foe Saint Leo at 11:15 a.m.
