#5 Softball Handles Shorter In Series-Opening Doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The fifth-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team took two games in the series opener against Gulf South Conference foe Shorter, winning 9-4 and 8-0 to sweep the Hawks.

AUM brings their 2022 record to 37-8 and 24-5 in Gulf South Conference action. Shorter falls to 6-43 this season with a 2-26 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

Game one saw 25 total hits between the two teams, with the Warhawks gaining 13 of them. Freshman Chloe Derrick was tied for the team-high with three hits in the contest and drove in two runs in the process. Kat Fallen also had three tallies, while Faith Wheat and Haley Ann Frank had multi-hit efforts.

Like most games down the stretch for the Warhawks, Molly Cobb got the scoring started in the first inning. She was able to bring home Fallen on an RBI groundout to give AUM a 1-0 lead. After Shorter answered with an RBI single in the second, Frank scored Wheat to give AUM a 2-1 lead.

Derrick was able to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third after racing a triple to center field to put AUM ahead 3-2. Wheat tallied another hit and brought home Derrick later in the inning with a single to double AUM's lead.

After Shorter cut the lead down to one, Shelby Newsome got the scoring started in the fourth with another RBI triple. Aycock, Fallen, and Margaret Morgan were able to secure RBIs in the bottom of the fourth frame to run the score to 8-3.

Fallen doubled down the left-field line in the bottom of the fifth to run the score to 9-3, allowing Morgan Ferguson to close the game out in the seventh to secure AUM's 9-4 win.

Hannah Creel was honored before the second game of the doubleheader against Shorter as part of the senior day ceremony. She proceeded to throw all five innings in the contest and matched her season-high of nine strikeouts while allowing just three hits.

Morgan shined offensively in game two, recording two hits and four RBIs against the Hawks. Fallen was able to record another multi-hit game and produced three runs for AUM.

It was Fallen who captured AUM's first run in the second game of the doubleheader, bringing in Olivia Aycock after she led off the inning with a triple. Cobb, however, did record her first-inning RBI, knocking in Fallen with a single.

Morgan recorded her first two RBIs of the day later in the first inning on a two-run single up the middle to score Wheat and Cobb to double AUM's lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the third, the catcher added two more runs for AUM on a two-run double.

Fallen tallied a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning on a line drive to center to score Aycock and secure AUM's seventh run. With two outs in the fifth, Fallen laced a double into the left-center gap to net a walk-off hit to send AUM home with an 8-0 win.

The Warhawks will have a chance to win the Gulf South Conference regular-season title for the second year in a row tomorrow afternoon in game three. A win secures the title and the number one seed in the Gulf South Conference tournament. The game is set to begin at noon tomorrow.
