Fallen Launches Walk-Off Grand Slam, Leads #4 Softball To Tournament-Opening Win

OXFORD, Ala. – Sophomore slugger Kat Fallen led the fourth-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team to a commanding 9-1 run-rule victory over eighth-seeded Union on Wednesday night in the Warhawks' tournament opener.

AUM wins their 39th game of the season and their fourth over the Bulldogs in 2022. AUM opens their title defense with a win and now moves to 5-0 in their last five GSC tournament games.

Fallen led the AUM offense in game one, netting five of AUM's nine runs. She went 1-2 at the plate with a grand slam and a sacrifice fly. The sophomore is now seven RBIs shy of becoming the single-season RBI leader in AUM softball history.

Junior hurler Alanna Goble netted her 10th win of the season in the tournament opener, throwing all six innings for the Warhawks. She allowed just four hits and one run on a home run and did not walk a batter against the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs got the scoring started in the first round against the Warhawks as they jumped on top after Fallen Groves hit a solo shot over the centerfield wall to give Union an early 1-0 lead. Fallen answered in the bottom of the third on a sac fly to even the score for AUM.

Freshman centerfielder Faith Wheat gave AUM their first lead of the tournament in the bottom of the fourth inning after an RBI double to center scored Oxford native Chloe Derrick to put the Warhawks ahead 2-1.

Margaret Morgan was able to put pressure on the Union defense later in the inning, reaching on an error allowing Wheat to score from second base to run the score to 3-1. After Shelby Edgeworth pinch ran for Morgan at second base, she was able to score from second on a wild pitch to give AUM their fourth run of the evening.

Olivia Aycock started the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning, racing a single through the left side of the infield to score Morgan. With the bases loaded later in the inning, the sophomore slugger Fallen clobbered a ball over the centerfield wall to give AUM a run-rule victory over Union.

The Warhawks' run in the postseason will continue tomorrow night as they will face fourth-seeded Alabama Huntsville with a trip to the GSC semifinals on the line. The action against the Chargers is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
