Rebecca Komers Clubs Three-Run Homer, Softball Splits Day Two of Gulf Shores Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The fourth ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team split day two of the Gulf Shores Invitational with a 9-3 defeat against Rollins College and a 9-2 victory over Florida Tech at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

HIGHLIGHTS (GM 1)
  • The Warhawks scored the first run of the contest in the third inning when Chloe Derrick used an error to reach base, which helped Olivia Aycock come in to score.
  • Rollins got a run back in the bottom of the third when Brie Michelli scored. 
  • Shelby Newsome hit a double in the fourth inning and scored Faith Wheat to put AUM back up 2-1. 
  • Rollins tallied four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning off three hits and then unearned run. 
  • AUM tried to rally in the fifth inning when Derrick hit a double and scored Shelby Edgeworth, but AUM could only score one run. 
  • Rollins tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning and secured the 9-3 victory over AUM. 
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
  • AUM's Avery Dickerson started the game against Rollins and worked three complete innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. She struck out three batters.
  • Brinkley Yevak replaced Dickerson and allowed four runs on five hits. She struck two batters out. 
HIGHLIGHTS (GM 2)
  • Florida Tech took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off a couple of RBI doubles. 
  • AUM used a big third inning by scoring seven runs. Allie Miller hit an RBI triple and scored Lexi Love. 
  • Chloe Baynes got to base on a fielder's choice and scored Miller from third base.
  • Shelby Edgeworth and Haley Ann Frank hit singles and scored two runs to extend the lead to 4-2. 
  • Rebecca Komers clubbed a three-run homer to push the Warhawks in front 7-2. 
  • Both teams chipped in an extra run in the sixth inning and AUM earned the 9-2 victory over the Panthers. 
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
  • Morgan Ferguson worked the entire game and allowed two runs on nine hits. She struck two batters out and faced 32 on the day. 
NOTABLES
  • Rebecca Komers recorded her first home run of the season against Florida Tech. 
  • Allie Miller went 2-of-5 on the day and plated a run for the Warhawks. 
  • AUM left 11 runners on base during the doubleheader. 
  • Chloe Derrick batted in two runs on two hits in the two games.

"We hit the ball well today," head softball coach Scottie Wilkes said. "We scored 13 runs on the day; three just was not enough against Rollins. The competition this weekend was good for us, and I am looking forward to seeing the progress and success this team achieves throughout the season."

UP NEXT

AUM travels to Melbourne, Florida, to compete in the Panther Invitational. The invitational will begin on Friday, Feb. 10 against No. 17 Tampa at Noon.
