Women's Soccer Drops Conference Opener Against Valdosta State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery women's soccer team dropped a tough 3-1 match against Valdosta State University in its 2023 Gulf South Conference opener on Friday night at the AUM Soccer Complex.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Valdosta took an early 1-0 lead on a 25th-minute Molly Wooldridge goal.
  • The Lady Blazers found a long snipe from Ansley Decenzo to make it 2-0 in the 37th minute, and both sides kept it a two-goal match at the halftime intermission.
  • AUM found some second-half momentum and created a couple of early chances. After the Blazers found another goal in the 63rd minute, the Warhawks answered back.
  • Marta Gonzalez played a long ball to twin sister Laia Gonzalez, who punched home a goal in the game's 66th minute to make it 3-1. 
  • A couple of late shot attempts went just wide for the black and orange as the final tally remained 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Valdosta State outshot AUM 16-6, but it was an even 5-5 tally in the second half that gave AUM some momentum.
  • The goal for Laia Gonzalez marked her second of the season for the Warhawks. On the year, Gonzalez ranks tied for first in the GSC in assists (3) and ranks tied for fourth in points (7).
  • Karla Gaytan leads the GSC in saves (23) and saves-per-match (4.6) for AUM.
FROM THE COACH'S BOX
  • "I am proud of the fight we put up, particularly in the second half," said head coach Julianne Herrity. "We created more scoring opportunities in the second half that we need to capitalize on going forward. We now turn to a recovery session tomorrow and look to get some points on the board on Sunday."

UP NEXT

AUM finishes up a six-game homestand on Sunday, Sept. 17 when the Warhawks take on the University of West Georgia at 1 p.m. at the AUM Soccer Complex.
