Pair of Goals, Another Clean Sheet Spark Men's Soccer Win in GSC Opener

JACKSON, Tenn. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer team remained unbeaten through five matches with a 2-0 road win against Union (Tenn.) University in the squad's 2023 Gulf South Conference opener.

Andrew Strait tallied his first career goal for the Warhawks, Logan Roach posted his team-leading second assist, and Charlie Elliott added his second goal of the season. Goalkeeper William Blake delivered his third shutout of the campaign behind five saves for the black and orange.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Warhawks wasted no time taking a lead, as Andrew Strait used his left foot to beat Union goalie Botond Nemeth to give AUM a 1-0 lead in the match's second minute.
  • AUM outpaced Union 7-6 in first-half shots, as the first 45 minutes closed with the visitors in front by Strait's goal. 
  • The visitors found the second tally of the night similarly to the first. In the 52nd minute, Elliott played a ball wide to Roach, who sent a long pass into the box. After a deflection, Elliott delivered a sizzler past the Bulldogs' keeper to make it 2-0 AUM.
  • Union took five second-half shots to AUM's three but were unable to crack the Warhawk defense.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Union out-shot the Warhawks 11-10, but AUM was able to get a pair of its shots to find the back of the net.
  • The assist from Roach marked his team-leading second of the year.
  • AUM shut out an opponent for the fourth time this season.
  • Blake remains ranked at the top of the GSC in goals-against-average and save percentage.

"I'm very proud of this group once again," head coach Matthew Thorne said. "It was a solid, consistent performance for us against a side that can attack very well and will score a lot of goals this year. Up the Warhawks!"
