CLINTON, Miss. -
Benjamin Hoffman scored a pair of goals as the AUM men's soccer team defeated Mississippi College, 3-0, on the final day of the regular-season at Longabaugh Field Sunday.
With the win, AUM (9-2-5, 7-2-2 Gulf South) finished in third place in the GSC standings with 23 points. The Warhawks will play host to Trevecca Nazarene (5-8-3, 4-5-2) in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 GSC Championship on Saturday night at the AUM Soccer Complex. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
AUM tallied at least 20 points in the GSC standings for the fifth-consecutive season and the seven league victories equal the 2021 squad for the most since moving to NCAA Status in 2017.
Against the Choctaws, Hoffman put the Orange and Black on the board in the 18th minute with a header that was assisted from just outside the left side of the penalty area by
Carlo Russo.
Hoffman got his second goal at the 62:18 mark when he stole a pass in the middle of the MC end of the field, made one move to the top of the 18 where he rifled a hard shot into the net. It was his eighth goal of the season.
The Warhawks made it a 3-0 contest in the 83rd minute when
Tasker Wheeler flicked a pass to the right side of the box, where
Alexander Carey got around a defender and returned the ball to Wheeler for a header over the outstretched hand of MC goalkeeper Cole Turner for his second score this year.
William Blake stopped all five shots on goal to record his fifth shutout and improve to 6-2-3 overall.
MC outshot AUM 12-7 but AUM had four shots on goal with three getting past the Choctaw defense.
