No. 17 Softball Splits Doubleheader With No. 1 North Georgia

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 17 Auburn University at Montgomery softball team split Tuesday's doubleheader against No. 1 University of North Georgia, dropping the first game of the series 2-1 and picking up the win in game two 3-1 at the AUM Softball Complex.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Alanna Goble retired the first nine batters she faced, picking up seven strikeouts along the way.
  • Chloe Baynes tallied the first hit of the game in the bottom of the third, but the Warhawks were unable to bring her home. 
  • Whitney Wells and Baynes reached base-on-balls in the fifth inning, but back-to-back outs ended the frame. 
  • UNG scored two runs in the top of the seventh on three hits. 
  • Baynes layed down a bunt-single in the bottom of the seventh to reach base. Haley Ann Frank doubled to push Baynes to third, and Molly Cobb hit a ball near the right-field warning track that was caught by UNG's Mariah Wicker. Baynes scored one run and a strikeout ended the game. 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Goble (L, 6-3) suffered the loss, working the complete game and struck out 10 batters on the day. She allowed two earned runs on five hits.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • UNG struck first in the top of the third inning with Georgia Blair doubling to center field and scored a run. 
  • In the fourth inning, Molly Cobb got things going for the AUM bats with a single through the right side. Fallen reached base on a UNG error and advanced to second and put Cobb on third base. 
  • Gia Martin delivered a single through the right side and scored pinch-runner Rebecca Komers and Fallen to make it 2-1. 
  • Martin stole third base and was able to score on a throwing error on UNG and AUM held a 3-1 lead. 
  • The Nighthawks had an opportunity in the top of the sixth with a runner on first base. The Warhawks defense stepped up and a double-play ended the inning. 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Brinkley Yevak (W, 2-0) hurled seven innings and struck out four batters. She allowed one run on four hits.

"Some great softball was played today," head coach Scottie Wilkes said. "That is the type of competition you live for. Our pitchers had a great showing today. Hate we were not able to come through with the win in game one, but our team showed some great fight. I am proud we were able to come on top in game two. Proud of our team today. It is a great day to be a Warhawk!"

The Warhawks travel to Lee University on March 15-16 for a three-game Gulf South Conference series in Cleveland, Tennessee.
