AUM Mourns the Passing of First Full-Time Athletic Director, Bill Elder

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery Department of Athletics is mourning the passing of Bill Elder, the school's first full-time director of athletics.

Elder, who passed away on July 8, enjoyed a forty-year-long career as a basketball coach and an administrator in collegiate athletics. Elder made coaching stops at Northeast State Junior College, University of Montevallo, and the University of Mobile, and finished his career with a 549-288 record. 

A 1995 inductee into the NAIA Basketball Coaches' Hall of Fame, Elder also spent 29 years as an athletic director at Northeast State Junior College, University of Mobile, LeTourneau University (Texas), Lindsey Wilson College (Kentucky), and Auburn University at Montgomery.

Elder also holds places in the University of Montevallo Sports Hall of Fame and the Lindsey Wilson College Athletic Hall of Fame and also earned recognition by the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame for his contribution to athletics in the city.
 
A private family-only graveside service will occur on July 19th, 2024, in Birmingham, Alabama, followed by a visitation and memorial service which will be held on Saturday, July 20th, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Frazer Free Methodist Church.

Gifts may be made in Bill's honor to Frazer Free Methodist Church in lieu of flowers.
