Warhawks Battle Mississippi College to 2-2 Draw

CLINTON, Miss. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's soccer team (3-5-3, GSC: 1-4-1) battled Mississippi College (4-3-3, GSC: 1-2-3) to a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon at Robert P. Longabaugh Field, with the Warhawks scoring twice in the second half before the Choctaws answered with two goals of their own. 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

First Half 
Mississippi Christian created the first chances of the match, with freshman Leslie Azouer making saves on two Choctaws inside the opening eight minutes of the game. AUM's first shot came from forward Eva Hendriks in the 13th minute, though it went wide of the goal. 

The Warhawks continued to work defensively as the half progressed, with Azouer adding another save on Lillie McCutchen in the 14th minute and stopping Jaylen Bodry  in the 19th minute.  

Rachel Wain recorded AUM's second shot of the half in the 40th minute, while Mississippi Christian added another attempt and corner kick late in the half, but neither team could find the breakthrough as the match remained scoreless at halftime. 

Second Half 
AUM came out of the break looking to create more offensively, while Azouer continued to keep Mississippi College off the board with a save on Kaylee Avant in the 51st minute. 

The Warhawks then broke through shortly after, as junior Courtney Pigford her first goal of the season in the 51st minute to give AUM a 1-0 lead. 

Mississippi College looked for an answer, but Azouer made another save in the 71st minute. The Warhawks then doubled their advantage just moments later, as Hendriks found the back of the net, her fifth of the season, in the 73rd minute to put AUM ahead 2-0. Hendriks added another shot shortly after her goal, but her attempt went wide. 

The Choctaws responded with a pair of goals in quick succession, as Bodry scored in the 80th minute off an assist from Abby Badurak before Kerri O'Hara found the back of the net less than a minute later to even the match at 2-2. 

Both teams continued to battle in the closing minutes, but neither could find a game-winning goal. Mississippi College recorded one final shot in the 88th minute, but it went high as the Warhawks held on for the 2-2 draw. 

Notables 

  • Leslie Azouer recorded six saves on Mississippi College's 14 shots, playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Warhawks, making her eleventh start of the season.  
  • AUM held a 2-0 lead in the second half after goals from Courtney Pigford and Eva Hendriks.  
  • Courtney Pigford scored her first goal of the season in the 51st minute to give the Warhawks the lead.  
  • Eva Hendriks recorded her firth goal of the season in the 73rd minute, giving AUM a 2-0 advantage.  
  • The Warhawks recorded five shots, with two landing on goal, while Mississippi College finished with 14 shots and eight shots on goal.
  • AUM held Mississippi College scoreless through the first 79 minutes before the Choctaws scored twice in a span of 44 seconds to even the match.
  • Three Warhawks, Eva Hendriks, Courtney Pigford and Lily Hillegas, played all 90 minutes.
