TYLER, Tx. - The Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team continued play at the GSC/Lone Star Crossover on Saturday morning, falling 5-2 to the Midwestern State Mustangs at the Summers Tennis Center in Tyler, Texas.
Doubles
Midwestern State secured the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. Mercedes Garcia Cid and Allison Blanco were first off the court at the No. 2 position, falling 6-1 to Camila Garcia and Jasmine Crain to give MSU an early advantage.
Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa answered at No. 1 doubles with a strong 6-3 victory over Selin Sepken and Emilia Gyorgy, evening the score at 1-1 in doubles play.
The deciding match came at No. 3, where Sofia Neri and Ana Clara Campigotto were locked in a tight contest before falling 4-3 due to retirement, securing the doubles point for Midwestern State.
Singles
At the No. 3 position, Nagisa Yonezawa fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, as the Mustangs extended their lead early in singles play. Allison Blanco responded at No. 4 singles with a gritty performance, earning a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Jasmine Crain to put AUM on the board. Blanco edged out the opening set in a tiebreak before closing out the match in straight sets.
At the top spot, Melissa Yakup Pour opened strong with a 6-2 first-set win but was unable to hold off Selin Sepken, ultimately falling 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a three-set battle. Mercedes Garcia Cid also forced a deciding set at No. 2 singles, rallying to claim the first set in a tiebreak before dropping a tightly contested 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision.
Ana Clara Campigotto fell 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 position as Midwestern State clinched the team victory. Competing in her third singles match, Valeria Garcia Chavez delivered a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles to account for AUM's second point of the match.
