MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team (4-8, GSC: 1-1) fell 6-1 to the No. 3 Tigers (9-3; GSC: 1-1) in Gulf South Conference action on Wednesday afternoon at home at the AUM Tennis Complex.
Doubles
The Tigers claimed the doubles point despite a win on the top court for AUM. At No. 1 doubles, Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa secured the Warhawks' lone doubles victory of the afternoon, defeating Shaira Rivera and Alexa Milliam, 6-4.
At No. 2 doubles, Ana Clara Campigotto and Valeria Garcia Chavez fell 6-1 to the pairing of Jenaila Prulla and Jian Ibrahim.
The deciding match came on Court 3, where Allison Blanco and Mercedes Garcia Cid battled in a tightly contested match. The duo dropped a 7-6 decision that went to an 8-6 tiebreak, allowing the Tigers to secure the doubles point.
Singles
In singles play, the Warhawks picked up their lone point of the afternoon on Court 2. Mercedes Garcia Cid, the reigning Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week, delivered a strong performance with a 6-3, 6-1 straight-set victory over Alexa Milliam.
At No. 6 singles, Valeria Garcia Chavez faced Greta Zawels. Garcia Chavez battled early but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-0. On Court 1, Melissa Yakup Pour matched up against Shaira Rivera, who she and Nagisa Yonezawa had defeated in doubles. Rivera took the singles contest 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 3 singles, Nagisa Yonezawa returned to the court against Jian Ibrahim, who secured the match 6-3, 6-2. On Court 5, Ana Clara Campigotto faced Nanoka Kazama. Kazama claimed the contest 6-2, 6-4.
The final singles match of the afternoon came on Court 4, where Allison Blanco battled Jenaila Prulla, who had also played in the Tigers' Court 2 doubles victory earlier in the day. Prulla took the match 6-1, 6-4.
