Warhawks Split Friday Doubleheader with Union

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 6 Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks softball team (33-7, GSC: 16-7) took the series opener 2-0 over the Union Bulldogs (14-24, GSC: 6-16) before dropping the second game 6-3 on Friday evening from the AUM Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: AUM 2, Union 0
After breaking the program's career stolen base record earlier this week, Chloe Baynes led off the game with a single up the middle before swiping second base with her signature speed. As the next batter, Gabbi Barnowsky knocked a base hit through the left side, advancing Baynes to third. Rebecca Komers drove a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Baynes to trot home and score the first run of the day. Not long after, Olivia Watkins hit a strong double to left field, plating Barnowsky and putting AUM ahead 2-0 after one frame.

The remainder of the game was a defensive battle with both teams fighting to add runs to their tallies. Reese Cauley led the way with one-two-three innings in the second and fifth innings, securing a 2-0 shutout victory for the Warhawks.

Game One Notables
  • Reese Cauley threw her 18th complete game of the season with 7.0 innings of work today. She totaled nine strikeouts while giving up just four hits and no runs. Her performance marks her sixth shutout of the year.
  • Olivia Watkins led AUM's offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate while adding an RBI double in the first inning to tie Komers for the most doubles this season with nine.
  • Chloe Baynes, Gabbi Barnowsky, and Rebecca Komers each added a hit to round out the Warhawks' offensive efforts.

Game Two: AUM 3, Union 6
Once again, the Warhawks struck first after loading the bases in the second inning and Baynes drawing a walk to bring home Watkins, who singled up the middle to lead off the inning.

The Bulldogs responded in the third frame with two runs on one hit and an AUM error to take the lead, 2-1. Another pair of runs in the fifth inning brought Union's advantage to 4-1.

The orange and black got one back in the bottom of the frame led by Baynes' powerful triple to left field as the leadoff batter. Barnowsky followed with an RBI single to bring Baynes home and cut the deficit to 4-2.

The visiting team was able to score two runs in the sixth inning and take a 6-2 lead.

Jasmine Sneed opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run over the left field wall; however, the Warhawks' efforts wasn't enough as Union went on to secure a game two 6-3 win.

Game Two Notables
  • Chloe Baynes led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate while drawing a walk, scoring a run, and driving in a run. Her third inning triple marks her fifth of the season and ties her for second in the GSC.
  • Olivia Watkins matched her game one outing with three hits on three at-bats while scoring once herself.
  • Jasmine Sneed hit a solo homer in the final inning as her sixth of the year.
