First-Half Cold Spell Dooms Men’s Hoops at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. ------ Romoane Eager came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points and pull down eight rebounds for the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team, but West Florida used a 23-5 spurt to end the first half and defeated the Warhawks 80-61 Saturday.

NOTES
• With the loss, the Warhawks fell to 0-3 on the season.
• The Argos remained undefeated on the year, improving to 3-0.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Eager finished 7-of-10 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, en route to the game-high total. He added eight rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Kameron Hornbuckle recorded four points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots in the contest.
Lafayette James-Core tallied eight points and four rebounds for the Warhawks.
Desmond DeRamus recorded just four points, but finished with five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
• Freshman Michael Bryant scored five points and grabbed two rebounds in his first collegiate start.
Julius McCoy scored eight points off the bench.
• Jason Laatsch led three West Florida players in double figures with 15 points. He added six rebounds and six assists.
• Rashaan Benson and Mario Stramaglia also finished in double figures for the Argos.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Despite falling behind 13-4 in the opening 3:33, the Warhawks rallied with a 9-3 run to pull within three points at 16-13 on an Eager bucket with 12:43 remaining in the first half.
• The Argos scored the next 18 points, fueled by three 3-pointers by Stramaglia, and took a 34-13 advantage with 5:01 to play. A trey by Jake Carnley stopped the run, but AUM still trailed 39-18 at the half.
• West Florida extended its lead to a game-high 27 points, 65-38, on a three-point play by Darryl Tucker with 9:08 remaining in the contest.
• The Warhawks cut the deficit to as few as 15 points, 74-59, when Eager scored in the paint with 2:12 left to play, but they were unable to get closer.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks finished 24-of-59 from the floor, good for 40.7 percent. AUM hit 8-of-24 shots from behind the arc and 5-of-9 free throw attempts.
• The Argos converted 44.8 percent of their shots, including 8-of-17 from distance. UWF also made 12-of-18 shots from the charity stripe.
• The Warhawks fell on the glass, 42-38, including 13-10 on the offensive boards. The Argos scored 13 second-chance points, compared to AUM's 10.
• AUM committed an uncharacteristic 22 turnovers, leading to 25 points off turnovers for West Florida. The Warhawks forced 15 turnovers, but converted them to just nine points.
• The Argos finished with 38 points in the paint, compared to 24 for the Warhawks.

UP NEXT
The Warhawks will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 22, when they travel to Mississippi College for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
