DAYTONA, Fla. ------ The Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team dropped a 65-56 decision to St. Augustine's Saturday in the finale of the Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout, hosted by Embry-Riddle.
NOTES
• The loss dropped the Warhawks to 0-6 on the year.
• The Falcons improved to 3-4 overall.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
•
Jarett Croff fell one point shy of his second consecutive double-double, finishing with nine points, a game-high 17 rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals.
•
Darrion Taylor came off the bench to score a team-best 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers and snagging two steals.
•
Lafayette James-Core scored 12 points, had three rebounds and three assists for the Warhawks.
•
Desmond DeRamus scored 10 points, had five assists, grabbed three rebounds and tallied two steals.
•
Kameron Hornbuckle came off the bench and scored four points and pulled down six rebounds, four of which were offensive.
• Anthony Gaskins scored a game-high 29 points and had seven rebounds for the Falcons.
• Quincy January also scored in double figures, recording 19 points and team-high nine rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Warhawks opened the game on fire, racing out to an 18-5 lead after a Taylor jumper with 6:13 remaining in the first half. Five different players scored for AUM, with Taylor, Croff, Hornbuckle and James-Core scoring four each during the run.
• The Falcons clawed back into the game with a 12-1 run during the next 4:10 to pull within two at 19-17 on a pair of free throws by January with 2:03 remaining in the half. Taylor and
Julius McCoy each hit 3-pointers down the stretch and gave the Warhawks a 25-21 halftime advantage.
• SAU used a 10-3 run to start the second half to gain a 31-28 lead following a trey by Ken Collins with 18:08 left in the contest.
• The Warhawks held a 44-40 advantage with 9:12 to play following a Croff tip-in basket. However, the Falcons pulled ahead for good with 12 straight points, with Gaskins scoring seven of the points during the stretch. The spurt was part of a 21-3 run over an eight-minute span to put the game out of reach.
• The Warhawks scored the final six points of the game on treys by Taylor and DeRamus to provide the final margin.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM converted 39 percent of its shots, hitting 23-of-59 from the floor, including 9-of-20 from distance. The Warhawks attempted just two free throws in the game, making one.
• The Falcons hit 41.5 percent of their shots from the field, including 54.6 percent in the decisive second half. St. Augustine's hit just 3-of-19 shots from behind the arc and made only 8-of-14 free throws.
• The Warhawks had an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers in the game, leading to 27 points for the Falcons. SAU turned the ball over just 11 times, for 13 points by AUM.
• Behind the big day from Croff, the Warhawks held a 41-36 advantage on the boards, but St. Augustine's had a 14-12 edge in second-chance points.
• The contest featured six ties and six lead changes.
