Farnsworth Leads Women’s Hoops in Home Opener, but Warhawks Fall to West Florida, 66-52

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ------ Despite a career-high 21 points off the bench by Grace Farnsworth, the Auburn Montgomery women's basketball team was defeated by visiting West Florida, 66-52, in its home opener Sunday afternoon.

NOTES
• The Warhawks fell to 1-5 on the season.
• West Florida improved to 5-0 on the year.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Farnsworth finished with 21 points and nine rebounds in 24 minutes of play. She bettered her previous career-best of 19 points set in the season opener against Lynn.
Nadia Stewart also finished in double figures, scoring 11 points. She added three rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.
Tyra Caudle tallied eight points and five rebounds, while also collecting two steals.
Shanna Strain scored five points and grabbed six rebounds for the Warhawks.
Danielle Gaines-Jordan had seven rebounds and two points.
• Toni Brewer finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
• Courtney Meyer (13), Imani Mulmore (12) and Alex Coyne (11) also scored in double figures. Meyer added nine rebounds and Coyne finished with a game-high eight assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Argos raced out to a 9-3 lead in the first 3:16 of the contest, but the Warhawks rallied and pulled within one, 16-15, on a trey by Farnsworth with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter. A basket by Brewer and Mulmore down the stretch gave UWF a 20-15 first-quarter advantage.
• The Warhawks trimmed the margin to four points, 24-20, on a Stewart trey by with 5:33. The Argos closed the quarter with an 8-4 spurt and took a 32-24 halftime lead.
• A layup by Coyne in the opening seconds of the third quarter gave UWF a double-digit lead, 34-24, a margin it held for the entire third quarter. The Argos led 45-34 after three quarters.
• The Warhawks stayed within 11 points, 51-40, following a layup by Strain with 6:27 left in the contest, but West Florida answered with seven consecutive points to put the game out of reach.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks held the Argos 16 points under their season average with the 66 points.
• AUM converted 20-of-57 shots from the floor, including 5-of-19 from behind the arc. The Warhawks hit 7-of-9 free throws.
• West Florida hit 41.5 percent from the field, but just 4-of-15 from distance. The Argos also hit just 8-of-16 free throws.
• The Argos controlled the paint, outscoring AUM 38-18 for the game.
• The Warhawks dropped the rebounding margin 44-37, including 13-7 on the offensive glass. AUM finished with just two second-chance points, while UWF tallied 12.
• The Warhawks committed 16 turnovers, while forcing 12. West Florida converted 12 points off AUM miscues, while the Warhawks were unable to record a point due to the Argos turnovers.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 29, when they travel to North Alabama for a 6 p.m. contest.
