Season-Best Fourth Quarter Comes up Short for Women’s Basketball against Tuskegee

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ------ Despite scoring a season-best 30 points in the fourth quarter, the Auburn Montgomery women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 78-71 decision to Tuskegee Friday evening at the AUM Gymnasium.

NOTES
• The Warhawks fell to 1-7 on the season.
• The Tigerettes improved to 4-5 overall.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
Grace Farnsworth led four AUM players in double figures with 16 points, while adding a game-high 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. The double-double was the first of her career with the Warhawks.
Kaylan Withrow scored a season-high 13 points, hitting three 3-pointers and grabbing five rebounds.
• In her first start of the season, Aleksandra Trisic finished with a season-high 10 points, while adding a pair of rebounds and an assist.
Nadia Stewart finished with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Warhawks.
• Rachel Brownlee scored a game-high 22 points and added seven rebounds to lead Tuskegee.
• Taylor Miller also finished in double figures, scoring 14 points, dishing out three assists and tallying two steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trisic gave the Warhawks a 2-0 lead 28 seconds into the game, but AUM trailed 7-6 with 6:28 left in the first quarter. The Tigerettes took a nine-point lead, 17-8, with a 10-2 run capped by a layup by Teja Finlay with 3:41 remaining in the quarter. Closing the quarter with a 7-3 spurt, Tuskegee led 24-11 after one quarter.
• AUM pulled to within seven points on a pair of occasions, including 33-26 at the 3:01 mark of the second quarter following a Trisic hoop. However, a 9-2 run by the Tigerettes to close the half left the Warhawks trailing 42-28 at the intermission.
• The Tigerettes upped their advantage to a game-high 23 points, 59-36, on a basket by Asha Stegall with 57 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Following a trey by Farnsworth and a pair of free throws by Chandler Sutton, AUM trailed 61-41 after three.
• The Warhawks opened the fourth quarter with a blistering 14-2 run, keyed by 3-pointers by Withrow and Anastasia Evans, and capped by a trey from Shanna Strain with 6:08 remaining.
• Trailing by 11 points, 72-61, with 1:30 to play, the Warhawks erupted for a 10-2 spurt, fueled by eight straight points by Stewart, and pulled within three points, 74-71, with 30 seconds to play. Despite the rally, Miller and Brownlee each hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to provide the final margin.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks finished 27-of-67 from the floor, good for 40.3 percent. AUM hit 9-of-24 shots from behind the arc, but made just 8-of-17 from the charity stripe.
• Tuskegee was 30-of-74 from the field, including 6-of-21 from distance. The Tigerettes converted 12-of-18 free throws.
• AUM stayed close on the boards, falling 48-41 on the glass and just 16-12 on the offensive end. The Warhawks converted 14 second-chance points, compared to just 13 by Tuskegee.
• The Warhawks committed 17 turnovers in the contest, leading to 16 points by the Tigerettes. Tuskegee committed just nine miscues, leading to 10 AUM points.
• The 30 points in the fourth quarter by the Warhawks was the most this season by the team, bettering the previous best of 25 in the fourth at Georgia Southwestern on Nov. 15.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks have a quick turnaround, as they head to Livingston, Ala., on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest against West Alabama.
