Wellman Signs Free Agent Deal with Toronto Blue Jays

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ----- Auburn Montgomery catcher Brett Wellman has signed a free agent contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, the organization announced this weekend.

Wellman joins former AUM second baseman Trevor Sprowl in the professional ranks. Sprowl was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 26th Round earlier this month.

In his final season with the Warhawks, Wellman hit .248 with a double and 14 runs batted in. He also walked 24 times, a mark which ranked tied for second on the team, and put down six sacrifice bunts. His .390 on-base percentage ranked third on the team and he tied for the team lead by being hit by five pitches.

Wellman was instrumental to the team with his play behind the plate, where he committed just four errors in 248 chances. He also threw out 13-of-56 runners attempting to steal. He also recorded four pick offs.

Wellman was assigned to the Blue Jays Gulf Coast League rookie affiliate in Dunedin, Fla.
