Women’s Soccer Draws Home Opener Against Young Harris College

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- The Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team drew a 1-1 decision in their first home match of the season against Young Harris College Thursday night.

NOTES
• The match was the first draw of the season for both teams.  The Warhawks now have a 1-1-1 record, and Young Harris has a posted a 1-0-1 record.
• Freshman Ruby Mendez is the only Warhawk to have scored a goal so far this season.
• Tonight's contest was the first ever night game at the AUM Soccer Complex.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Mendez netted the lone goal for the Warhawks which marked her second of the season off of four shots, two being on frame. 
• Freshman Chelsie China tallied her first career assist, on the Mendez goal.
• Seniors Courtney Omodei and Mandeville Wakefield and freshman Trinity Prater each added a shot of their own for the Warhawks.
• Junior keeper Morgan Glenn saved six shots on goal during the match.
• Emily Ober scored the lone goal for the Mountain Lions and was assisted by Laisy Scardazzi.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• In the seventh minute of the match, Young Harris struck first with a goal from Ober, who was assisted by Scardazzi to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead.
• In the 19th minute, Mendez scored her second goal of the season for AUM, and was assisted by China.
• Following a change at goalie at halftime for the Warhawks, Glenn played the second half of the match without giving up a single goal, and led that momentum into overtime where she added on twenty more minutes of scoreless defense, leading to the double-overtime draw.
• In the 90th minute, Roche nearly scored a game-winner for the Mountain Lions as her shot from outside the box skipped off of the crossbar to send the game into extra time.
• During the first overtime period around the 100-minute mark, the Warhawks saw their best chance in extra-time on a Mendez shot that just missed the upright.
• Neither team was able to capitalize during the remainder of the overtime period, which led the Warhawks to finish their 2016 home opener in a 1-1 draw against Young Harris.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Young Harris outshot the Warhawks 24-7 on the evening although just 10 were on frame for the Mountain Lions.
• AUM keepers totaled nine saves during the match, and Young Harris tallied only one.
• The Mountain Lions did not record a save in the match until the second overtime period.
• Young Harris edged the Warhawks in corner-kicks for the night with a final mark of 10-4.
• Following two early goals, each team played to a scoreless draw for the final 90 minutes of the match including the overtime periods.
 
 QUOTING THE HEAD COACH
• "I thought we played really well against a quality Young Harris team," head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge stated.  "I am really excited for our fighting spirit this year and I think we are going to have a great season."
 
UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Tuesday, September 13 when they host Emmanuel College.  Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
