MONTGOMERY, Ala. ------ Despite trailing by just four points with 8:10 to play, the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team fell to Montevallo 86-74 Monday at the AUM Gymnasium.
NOTES
• With the loss, the Warhawks fell to 4-12 overall on the year.
• Montevallo improved to 8-1 on the season.
• Hornbuckle's previous career high was 10 points set earlier this season against Union on Nov. 17.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
•
Darrion Taylor led the Warhawks with 18 points, while adding three rebounds and two steals.
•
Kameron Hornbuckle scored a career-high 12 points, finishing 6-for-6 from the field.
•
Julius McCoy scored 13 points off the bench, chipping in three rebounds and a steal.
•
Romoane Eager scored seven points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists.
•
Lafayette James-Core finished with five points and six rebounds off the bench.
•
Devonte Carter had seven points in eight minutes for AUM.
• Javonte Douglas recorded a game-high 23 points, adding six rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot for the Falcons.
• Jamaar Taylor (18) and Tony Bagtas (17) also scored in double figures for Montevallo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• After seven lead changes in the opening three minutes, the Warhawks took 13-9 lead on a trey by Carter with 16:21 to play in the first half.
• The Falcons rallied and tied the score at 17 with 13:20 left in the half, but AUM answered with a 9-3 run, capped by an Eager basket with 10:59 remaining in the half.
• Montevallo rallied back and took a 28-26 lead on jumper by AJ Luke with 9:03 remaining before halftime.
• The Falcons took a 39-30 lead on a dunk by Taylor with 4:28 remaining, capping a 19-4 run during a six-minute span.
• The Warhawks closed the half with a 12-3 run and enter the intermission tied 42-42.
• Montevallo opened the second half with an 11-2 run and took a 53-44 lead following a Kevin Kelly layup with 16:57 remaining in the contest.
• Trailing by 12 points, 65-53, with 10:15 to play, the Warhawks used a pair of treys by McCoy and trimmed the margin to four points, 66-62, with 8:10 to play.
• The Falcons scored the next four points and extended the lead back to double figures after a layup by Taylor with 6:30 left in the contest.
• AUM was unable to close the deficit to single digits down the stretch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks finished 27-of-62 from the field, but just 5-of-17 from distance. The Warhawks made just 15-of-24 from the free throw line.
• The Falcons converted 56.4 percent of their shots, hitting 31-of-55 for the game. Montevallo hit 4-of-11 from behind the arc and 20-of-26 from the charity stripe.
• AUM finished with 13 turnovers, while forcing 15 by the Falcons. The Warhawks finished with an 18-16 advantage in points off turnovers.
• The Falcons held a 36-30 advantage in total rebounds, but the Warhawks pulled down 12 offensive rebounds, compared to just eight by Montevallo. AUM held a 15-10 advantage in second-chance points.
• The Warhawks bench outscored the Falcons bench 26-10.
• Montevallo outscored AUM 46-36 in the paint.
