Men’s Soccer Nets A 4-2 Victory On Senior Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Playing in their final home match of the season the Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team earned its first win of the season, defeating Gulf South Conference foe Shorter University on Sunday afternoon at the AUM Soccer Complex, as the Warhawks celebrated Senior Day in style with a 4-2 victory.
 
NOTES
• AUM improves to 1-13 on the season, with a 1-6 mark in the GSC.
• Shorter falls to 3-10 on the year, and 2-6 in league play.
• The Warhawks scored a season-high four goals in the contest.
Stephen Ingram, Nino Bozesan, Talal Salameh and Christian Young were honored before the game as a part of Senior Day festivities.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• AUM's Tiuri Schieving scored a pair of goals in the contest.
Jesus Escalera tallied two assists for the Warhawks
• Freshman goalkeeper Justin Presor got the first win of his career, recording three saves and an assist.
• Shorter's Felix Guijosa recorded both of the Hawks'
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
• Presor started a counter attack for the Warhawks in the seventh minute, setting up Escalera down the left side with a long throw. Escalera attacked the Shorter defense from the left, crossing the ball in to William York who settled, turned and fired to score his first goal of the season and give AUM a 1-0 advantage.
Vilhjalmur Runarsson set up Schieving's first goal of the day, crossing a ball from outside the 18 that deflected off of the Hawks' goalkeeper directly at a charging Schieving, who put the Warhawks up 2-0 with a quick strike in the 19th minute.
• Schieving scored his second goal of the day off of an Escalera cross into the box that Schieving was able to slide into and put in the back of the net to give AUM a 3-0 advantage.
• Guijosa scored from 20 yards out on a brilliant strike in the 28th minute that beat the keeper in the left upper 90.
• The Hawks then pulled to within a goal on another long strike from Guijosa in the 50th minute.
• After battling back and forth for control of the contest, AUM's Alexis Arriaga sealed the victory with a goal with 37 seconds left on the clock. The goal was set up by a Christian Young shot off a counter attack that was blocked by Shorter's keeper, but rebounded to the feet of Arriaga.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
• AUM recorded 20 shots (12 on goal) while Shorter recorded 15 (five on goal).
• The Warhawks tallied six corner kicks to just three for the Hawks.
• Ten different Warhawks tallied a shot in the contest.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will travel to Cleveland, Miss., on Friday, Oct. 20, to take on GSC opponent Delta State in a match set to begin at 3 p.m. AUM will finish out their weekend trip with Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
