Second Half Surge Propels Warhawks Past Delta State, 4-2

CLEVELAND, Miss. – After trailing 2-1 heading into halftime against home-standing Delta State University, the Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team scored three second half goals to earn a 4-2 victory over the Lady Statesman on Friday afternoon in Gulf South Conference action on Friday afternoon.   
 
NOTES
• AUM improves to 6-8 with a 5-6 record in GSC play. Delta State falls to 5-11 with a 3-9 mark in GSC play.
• Sophomore forward Ruby Mendez recorded two goals and an assist in the winning effort for the Warhawks.
• Freshman forward Stine Svaerke scored a pair of goals for the Warhawks, including the game-winner.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Svaerke netted her fourth and fifth goals of the season in the winning effort.
• Mendez has now reached double digit goals this year with 11.
• Delta State forward Jasmine McGill scored her seventh goal of the year in the 32nd minute.
• AUM keepers combined to record six saves in the match.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Delta State jumped out to an early lead in the 12th minute of the match when forward Traci Moore netted her second goal of the year.  
• Mendez answered for the Warhawks in the 31st minute on an unassisted goal that tied the game at 1-1.  
• The Lady Statesmen took the lead again just one minute later when McGill put Delta State back on top in the 32nd minute when she capitalized on a great pass from Cat Buckley to pull ahead 2-1.   
• The Warhawks wasted no time in the second half as Mendez scored her second goal of the game in the 55th minute to tie the game at two. Mendez won the ball from a Lady Statesmen defender, then drove the ball past the keeper's right side.
• AUM took their first lead of the game in the 61st minute when Svaerke took a through ball from Mendez and slotted the ball past the keeper to put the Warhawks up 3-2.
• Svaerke found the net again in the 82nd minute to put the game on ice for the Warhawks. Agnes Edlund sent a through ball that found the legs of Svaerke who then shot the ball over the sliding keeper to give the Warhawks a 4-2 lead.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM finished the match with 14 shots, with six on target. Delta State finished the game with 22 shots with eight on frame
• Delta State led AUM in corner kicks 9-4.  
• The Lady Statesmen recorded two saves while the Warhawks picked up six.

STAT OF THE GAME
• Mendez recorded her fifth multi-goal game of the year during the 4-2 win at Delta State.  

UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will be back in action Saturday, October 21 as they continue their road trip through Mississippi when they take on #20 Mississippi College. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday but was moved up a day due to the threat of inclement weather. Game time is set for noon.
