MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Junior forward
Jemaiya Lee recorded a double-double in her Auburn Montgomery debut on Saturday afternoon in the GSC/SIAC Challenge, hosted by the University of Montevallo, propelling the women's basketball team to a 61-58 victory over Tuskegee University.
NOTES
• AUM moves to 1-0, marking the ninth time over the last 10 seasons the Warhawks won their season opener.
• Tuskegee drops to 0-1.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Lee led the offense with 19 points, going 8-14 from the field, and matched the game-high in rebounds with 10.
• Sophomore guard
Aaliyah Milord tied Lee with 10 boards while chipping in seven points, three assists and two steals.
• Freshman
Makaylla Bullard recorded eight points in her collegiate debut, going 2-3 from beyond the ark, while adding a pair of assists and a steal.
• Junior forward
Evelina Avleeva contributed seven points with five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
• Sophomore forward
Regan Croff grabbed seven rebounds with a game-high four offensive boards to go with six points.
• For Tuskegee, Jade Wilson scored 14 points while adding seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing for the majority of the opening quarter, the Warhawks took their first lead of the frame with 2:55 remaining off a three pointer from Bullard to make it 8-7. The triple sparked a quarter-ending 10-2 run that put AUM ahead 15-9.
• AUM led by as many as 10 in the second quarter, using a jumper from redshirt sophomore center
Bailee Wolfe to make it 22-12 before six-straight points by Tuskegee cut the separation to four at 22-18. The Warhawks responded with a 6-2 run to recreate an eight-point advantage at 28-20, but TU ended the half on a 9-0 run, including a pair of free throws with two seconds on the clock, to go into halftime with a 29-28 lead.
• Tuskegee carried the momentum into the second half, creating a five-point lead at 35-30 before a 9-4 run by the Warhawks knotted up the score at 39-all. AUM took its first lead of the quarter with 1:30 left in the frame after a pair of free throws from Wolfe made it 45-44, but a Golden Tiger layup flipped the one-point lead.
• AUM opened the final quarter with back-to-back three pointers to create a five-point lead at 51-46. The Golden Tigers managed to knot up the score at 55-all, but a Lee layup and two free throws recreated a four-point cushion at 59-57.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks converted on 23-57 shots, including 5-11 from three-point territory.
• Tuskegee finished 20-61 from the field and 2-13 from distance.
• AUM scored 28 points in the paint versus eight for Tuskegee.
• AUM committed 18 turnovers, resulting in 14 TU points. The Golden Tigers committed 15 turnovers, leading to eight points.
• Tuskegee held a slim 45-42 advantage in rebounds.
• AUM dished out 13 assists, Tuskegee had eight.
