Men’s Basketball Heads To Lee And Shorter In Gulf South Conference Play

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team will travel to Lee University on Thursday evening before going to Shorter University on Saturday as the Warhawks open Gulf South Conference play on the road against the Flames and Hawks.

About the Warhawks
The Warhawks are 3-3 this year and are coming off of a second place finish at the 2017 Bahama House Shootout hosted by Embry-Riddle this past weekend. AUM hit the century mark in a 101-92 victory over the host Eagles on Friday evening before falling to UWA in the championship game on Saturday, 91-77.
 
The Warhawks are led offensively by junior guard Desmond DeRamus, who is averaging 15.8 ppg. Teammates Lafayette James-Core and Michael Bryant are averaging 12.8 and 10.2 ppg, respectively, with DeRamus also leading the team in assists with 25.
 
The game with Lee will be the first between the Flames and the Warhawks since the 2012-13 season, an 87-67 victory for LU. It will also be the first meeting between AUM and Shorter since the 2011-12 season, a 65-49 win for the Hawks.
 
The two games for AUM will be the first games as a member of the Gulf South Conference.
 
About the Flames
Lee is currently 4-1 on the season and are coming off of a 79-56 setback to Carson-Newman on Saturday. The Flames started the season with four wins in a row before the setback against the Eagles.
 
Sophomore forward Ryan Montgomery leads the Flames in scoring, averaging 10.6 points per game. Senior guard Levi Woods in rebounds with 34 and assists with 17 on the season.  
 
About the Hawks
Shorter is winless on the season, having dropped seven consecutive contests to start the season, and 10 in a row dating back to last year. The Hawks are coming off of a 96-71 setback against Laker Superior State at the Kentucky Wesleyan Thanksgiving Classic this past weekend. Shorter dropped their first game of the tournament to host KWC, 88-78.
 
Three players average double figures in scoring for the Hawks, with senior guard Amonte Potter leading the way at 16.9 points per game. Juniors Josh Burnett and TayVaughn Major are averaging 15.4 and 13.9 ppg, respectively, for the Hawks. Burnett leads the team in rebounds with 34 on the season while Major leads the team in assists with 25.
 
Up Next
AUM will next be in action on Wednesday, Dec. 13, when the Warhawks travel to Mobile, Ala., to take on Spring Hill College out of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m. between the Warhawks and the Badgers.
