MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Warhawks suffered a setback to Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College on Monday evening at the AUM Athletic Complex, falling 95-84 in overtime in men's basketball action.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 5-6 on the year with a 1-3 mark in GSC play.
• MC improves to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in league action.
• The Warhawks are now 0-3 lifetime against the Choctaws.
• Tonight was the first overtime contest this season for AUM.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Sophomore guard
Darrion Taylor scored a game-high 24 points for the Warhawks, while dishing out a team-best eight assists.
• Senior forward
Lafayette James-Core scored 14 for AUM, with two assists and two rebounds.
• Freshman forward
Airen Brooks scored 12 for the Warhawks in 20 minutes of action.
• Senior center
Jarett Croff pulled down a game-best nine rebounds to go along with eight points.
• MC's Leito Holloway scored 20 to lead all Choctaws, while Stacey Mack added 19.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The two teams battled back and forth over the opening minutes before Taylor hit a 3-pointer to put AUM up 16-14 with 12:59 to go in the first.
• The Choctaws retook the lead on a Davy Fisher trey before the Warhawks took it back on a Jame-Core 3-pointer to go up 21-20 with 9:33 left in the opening frame.
• MC's Donovan Ham tied the game at 28-28 with 5:53 to play in first, igniting a 15-6 run for the Choctaws who took a 43-34 lead into the break.
• Once again the two teams traded baskets back and forth to open the second half, but the Warhawks were able to inch closer and closer to MC. AUM's Brooks drained a triple with 9:18 to play to give the Warhawks their first lead of the second half, 63-62.
• Holloway would give MC the lead once again at the 4:29 mark, hitting a fade away jumper to put the Choctaws up 70-69.
• Down 76-74 with :23 seconds to play, Brooks hit a baseline jumper to tie the game at 76 points apiece. Holloway had a look at a 3-pointer as time expired but was unable to convert.
• Overtime saw the Choctaws convert 6-6 field goals, as well as 6-6 free throws, to outscore AUM 19-8 in the extra frame. The Warhawks converted 3-11 field goals and 1-2 free throws in the overtime period.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM outscored MC 17-2 in second chance points.
• Both teams scored 38 points in the paint.
• MC converted 19-25 free throws while AUM hit 10-15.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will next be in action Jan. 2, 2018, when they travel to GSC foe Christian Brothers for a doubleheader with the Buccaneers. The two women's teams will play at 5 p.m. followed by the men's game at 7 p.m.
