Men’s Hoops Reaches Century Mark as Seniors Lead Team to Victory

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ----- Seniors Julius McCoy, Romoane Eager and Jake Carnley combined for 64 points, with McCoy and Carnley setting career highs, as the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team closed out its season with a 101-79 win against Selma Saturday on Homecoming.

NOTES
• The Warhawks finished the season with a 7-19 record.
• The Bulldogs fell to 0-25 on the year.
• The contest marked the final game in the collegiate careers of Carnley, Eager and McCoy.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• McCoy finished 10-of-18 from the floor, hitting seven 3-pointers in the contest, en route to a game-high 31 points. McCoy bettered his previous career best of 19 points, set in his debut game with the Warhawks against Oakwood last season.
• Carnley enjoyed a strong showing in his final game with the Warhawks, sinking three 3-pointers and scoring a career-high 11 points. He added three rebounds, three assists and two steals in a career-high 31 minutes.
• Eager collected his first double-double of the season, finishing with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
• Freshman Darrion Taylor scored 14 points off the bench for AUM. Taylor added four assists, three steals and three rebounds.
• Junior Kameron Hornbuckle finished with six points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
• DeVante Brown finished with a team-best 23 points for Selma.
• Derrick Jolly (21) and Rudolph Collins (10) also scored in double figures.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM trailed 4-0 in the contest, until Carnley drained a trey with 16:33 left in the first half to put the Warhawks on the board.
• The Bulldogs led 11-6 following a layup by Collins with 14:43 remaining in the half, but the Warhawks responded with a 9-0 run behind a 3-pointer by Carnley and a pair of 3's by McCoy. AUM led 15-11 with 12:45 remaining in the period.
• The contest remained close, with the Warhawks leading just 23-21, with 6:47 remaining before halftime. However, AUM responded with 10 consecutive points and opened a 33-21 lead with 3:03 left. The Warhawks led 35-25 at halftime.
• AUM led by 11 points, 45-34, with 15:26 left in regulation, but the Bulldogs stormed back and tied the scored at 52-52 on a layup by Jolly with 10:19 remaining.
• Freshman Michael Bryant started a 7-0 AUM run with a layup with 9:44 left to give AUM the lead for good.
• The Warhawks led by six points, 62-56, with 6:29 remaining, before exploding for a 19-5 run and establish an 81-61 lead on a pair of Taylor free throws with 3:40 left in the contest.
• AUM built as much as a 23-point lead down the stretch before settling for the 22-point victory. Taylor put the Warhawks over the century mark on a trey with 15 seconds remaining.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM shot 49.3 percent from the field, including a blazing 62.2 percent in a 66-point second half. The Warhawks were 17-of-39 from distance (43.6 percent) and 14-of-24 from the charity stripe.
• The Bulldogs converted 40 percent of their shots, but just 8-of-28 from behind the arc.  Selma was 15-of-18 from the free throw line.
• The Warhawks held a 44-39 advantage in total rebounds, including a 12-11 edge on the offensive boards. Selma outscored AUM 10-7 in second-chance points.
• AUM committed 12 turnovers, while forcing 16 miscues. The Warhawks held a commanding 21-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
• The Warhawks outscored Selma 35-16 from the bench.
•  The 17 made 3-pointers and 39 attempts from behind the arc were both season highs for AUM.
 
UP NEXT
The contest marked the conclusion of the 2016-17 season for the Warhawks. AUM finished its first full NCAA Division II schedule with a 7-19 record.
