MONTGOMERY, Ala. ------ The Auburn Montgomery softball team recognized the accomplishments of the five members of the 2017 senior class before the start of game one, but fell in both games on Saturday afternoon to Young Harris 9-3 in game one, and 5-3 in game two.
NOTES
• The Warhawks fell to 14-11 on the year.
• The Mountain Lions improved to 18-4 on the season.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Freshman
Jaycie Walker led the way for the Warhawks offensively with a hit and a stolen base in game one, before finishing 3-for-3 in game two with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored.
• Senior
Sarah Angulo tallied three hits on the day, including a two hit showing in game one with a double.
• Fellow seniors
Sydney Dishman and
Rachel Ragland each picked up two hits in game two, and Dishman added a double with an RBI.
• Sophomore
Kaylin Finch and junior
Kalee Sparks each added a double on the day.
• Grace Botti led the way for Young Harris offensively on a 2-for-3 day with six RBIs that included a double and a home run.
GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning on a bases loaded sacrifice fly from Finch that plated Pinholster to give the Warhawks an early 1-0 lead. Â
• After a scoreless second, Young Harris responded with its first five hits of the game that included five runs. The Mountain Lions led 5-1 heading to the home half of the third.
• AUM tallied an additional run in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded walk from Dishman that scored Persinger. Kovalsky stranded the bases loaded to keep the Mountain Lion lead at 5-2.
• Neither team was able to score despite countless chances from both sides until the seventh inning. Angulo provided the only hit for both teams over the three inning span.
• Young Harris exploded offensively in the top of the seventh for four runs on four hits, to lead 9-2 heading into the final frame.
• A Sparks double to left center in the bottom of the seventh plated Hendrix, but the Warhawks were unable to overcome the two big offensive innings from Young Harris. The Mountain Lions held on to win 9-3 behind Kovalsky throwing five innings of relief in which she gave up just one run.
GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team scored in the first, but Young Harris took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second. A Botti two run home run to deep left plated Webb, and a Perrucci single to right center scored Benson.
• AUM tallied its first run of the game on two hits in the bottom of the third. A Walker single down the left field line plated Ragland to bring the game to within two.
• AUM added an additional run in the bottom of the fourth on two hits once again. A Dishman single to center plated Tucker. The Warhawks were unable to plate another run with the bases loaded, as the Mountain Lions led 3-2 after four innings in the books.
• AUM again added a single run on two hits in the bottom of the fifth. A Walker solo shot to right tied the game at 3, to give the Warhawks a chance for the doubleheader split.
• Young Harris took back the lead in the top of the sixth on a passed ball that Plated Davis for a 4-3 Mountain Lion lead.
• Despite a Dishman leadoff double and a Ragland single in the bottom of the sixth, Kovalsky once again stranded the bases loaded to preserve the 4-3 lead.
• Young Harris added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded walk from Botti that plated Perrucci. Kovalsky picked up her second win of the day retiring the Warhawks in order in the final frame to give the Mountain Lions the 5-3 victory in game two.
UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Monday, March 13, when they travel to Clermont, Fla. to compete in the Legend Way Tournament. They will face Hillsdale College at 7 a.m., and then Truman State University right after at 9:30 a.m.
