CLERMONT, Fla. ------ The Auburn Montgomery softball team split a pair of early morning games in the Legend Way Tournament defeating Hillsdale College 6-3 in game one, before falling to Truman State University 2-0 in game two.
NOTES
• The Warhawks moved to 15-12 on the year.
• The Chargers fell to 7-9 on the season.
• The Bulldogs improved to 14-9 on the year.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Freshman
Parker Pinholster led the way for the Warhawks offensively with a double, a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in game one, and finished game two a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base.
• Junior
Kalee Sparks was the only other Warhawk to pick up a hit in both games. She finished the first game 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and added an additional single in the second game.
• Senior
Sydney Dishman finished the first game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a game-high two runs scored. Fellow senior
Sarah Angulo and junior
Rose Schmidt also tallied an RBI.
• Senior
Rachel Ragland improved to 8-5 on the year with a six strikeout performance in game one without giving up an earned run. Freshman
Chanel Newcomer picked up her first career save recording the final out with runners on first and second in game one.
• Amanda Marra led the way for Hillsdale finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored. Valerie Schmidt led the way for Truman State on a 2-for-2 performance with a triple and a run scored.
GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a scoreless first, AUM got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. A dropped fly ball in the outfield allowed Dishman to score, and an RBI infield groundout from Angulo plated Finch for an early 2-0 Warhawk lead. Â
• Neither team would be able to tally a run until AUM added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. A Sparks single to left center plated Pinholster, and a Dishman single to the pitcher plated Walker. Another outfield error plated Sparks, and a Schmidt single up the middle scored Dishman to give the Warhawks a 6-0 lead.
• Ragland allowed a pair of hits in the top of the first inning, and held the Chargers to no hits until the top of the seventh.
• A wild pitch plated Addis, and a Marra double to left center scored Lawrence for the first runs of the game by Hillsdale. Kish then singled through the left side to plate Marra. With runners on first and second and two outs, Newcomer entered the game to pick up her first career save on a ground out to third that gave AUM the 6-3 win in game number one.
GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team scored in the first, but Truman State took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. A first and third play allowed Van Nostrand to score, and a Cook single to short plated Schmidt for the only runs of the game.
• AUM was held hitless until the top of the fourth on a Pinholster single through the right side. Sparks followed with a single through the right side, however the Warhawks were unable to produce a run.
• Truman State added a hit in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, but were unable to add to its lead.
• AUM added a hit on a Pinholster single just over the third basemans head in the top of the sixth, but the Warhawks were unable to break the 2-0 score line in favor of the Bulldogs.
• Truman State added an additional hit on a Orenstein single to right center, but Newcomer stranded two on the base to give the Warhawks a chance in the final frame.
• AUM added its final hit of the game in the top of the seventh on a Ragland single to right, however the Warhawks were unable to produce a run to fall 2-0 in game number two to Truman State. Â
UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Tuesday, March 14, when they continue play in the Legend Way Tournament. They will face Bloomsburg University at 7 a.m., and then Concordia University St. Paul right after at 9:30 a.m.
